Grandstand (TV Programme)
''Grandstand'' was the flagship sports programme of the BBC which was broadcast on Saturday afternoons on BBC1 between 1958 and 2007, and from 1981 on Sunday afternoons as ''Sunday Grandstand'' on BBC2, although until 1998 the Sunday edition aired only during the summer. The last editions of ''Grandstand'' and ''Sunday Grandstand'' were broadcast over the weekend of 27–28 January 2007. History During the 1950s, sports coverage on television in the United Kingdom gradually expanded. The BBC regularly broadcast sports programmes with an outside studio team, occasionally from two or three separate locations. Production assistant Bryan Cowgill put forward a proposal for a programme lasting three hours; one hour dedicated to major events and two hours showing minor events. Paul Fox (TV)
Sir Paul Leonard Fox (27 October 1925 – 8 April 2024) was a British television executive, who spent much of his broadcasting career working for BBC Television, most prominently as the Controller of BBC One, BBC1 between 1967 and 1973. Early life Paul Leonard Fox was born on 27 October 1925, in Germany to Jewish parents. After the early death of his father, he came to the UK on a kindertransport in 1938. He was educated in Bournemouth and served in the Parachute Regiment (United Kingdom), Parachute Regiment from 1943 to 1946. Fox married, in 1948, Betty Nathan, who died in 2009. They had two sons one of whom, Jeremy, produced gameshows from his company Action Time. He was also the creator of The Krypton Factor. Tim Gudgin
Timothy Andrew Leonard Gudgin (25 November 1929 – 8 November 2017) was an English radio presenter and voiceover artist. He began working as a broadcaster for the British Forces Broadcasting Service before returning to the United Kingdom in 1952 to work as a studio manager and newsreader at the BBC European Service and did work introducing BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4 programmes. Following a three-year period as a public relations consultant to the government of the Isle of Man, Gudgin joined the BBC Saturday television sports programme ''Grandstand'' in 1976, reading the horse racing and rugby results in the Final Score segment. He became the second person to regularly read the classified football results after the death of Len Martin in 1995. Gudgin retired in November 2011. Len Martin
Leonard Martin (17 April 1919 – 21 August 1995) was an Australian-born British classified results reader. He worked in radio broadcasting at Australian radio stations and was known in the United Kingdom for reading out the football results, associated football pools statistics and horse-racing results on the BBC's Saturday afternoon sports programme, ''Grandstand'', from 1958 until the end of the 1994–95 English football season. Biography Martin was born in Rockhampton in the north of Queensland on 17 April 1919. He was educated at Columban College in Brisbane and spent his apprenticeship at sea with the Blue Star Line when he was a teenager prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. Vidiprinter
A vidiprinter is a sports scores and results ticker service provided to media organisations. It is shown on BBC One, BBC Red Button and Sky Sports News to provide a live on-air feed of football scores from country-wide and European league and cup competitions. It appears on-screen when a significant number of games are in progress. The vidiprinter service was originally supplied by the Press Association, doing so from the vidiprinter's inception until the end of the 2012/13 season. The contract was taken over by Opta Sports from the start of the 2013/14 season, and Opta has provided the service ever since. Implementation The BBC and Sky Sports show a vidiprinter during their scores and results programmes. On Saturdays, their vidiprinters appear at the start of the 3pm kick-offs until just after 5pm when all the results are in. Football Pools
In the United Kingdom, the football pools, often referred to as "the pools", is a betting pool based on predicting the outcome of association football matches taking place in the coming week. The pools are typically cheap to enter, and may encourage gamblers to enter several bets. The traditional and most popular game was the Treble Chance, now branded the Classic Pools game. Players pick 10, 11 or 12 football games from the offered fixtures to finish as a draw, in which each team scores at least one goal. The player with the most accurate predictions wins the top prize, or a share of it if more than one player has these predictions. ''Final Score'' is a BBC Television football news and results programme produced by BBC Sport. The programme is broadcast on late Saturday afternoons in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, usually on BBC One. BBC Northern Ireland opts away during the last ten minutes to cover local results in ''Final Score from Northern Ireland'', normally just after the Premier League scores are read out. BBC Scotland runs a different programme altogether – ''Sportscene Results''. ''Final Score'' is also broadcast on Boxing Day and New Year's Day and sometimes on either Good Friday or Easter Monday. The Scottish Football League (SFL) is a defunct league featuring professional and semi-professional football clubs mostly from Scotland.One club, Berwick Rangers, is based in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is located approximately 4 km south of the Anglo-Scottish border. The Football League First Division was the top division of the Football League in England from 1888 until the end of the 1991–92 season, when its teams broke away to form the Premier League. ''Football Focus'' is a BBC television magazine programme launched in 1974, broadcast live on BBC One on Saturday lunchtimes during the football season. The programme, along with '' Final Score'', is a remnant from the former flagship sports show '' Grandstand'' which for decades dominated the BBC One Saturday afternoon TV schedules.
