Caroline Esmeralda van der Leeuw (born 26 April 1981), formerly known as Caro Emerald and lately part of the music project The Jordan, is a Dutch pop and jazz singer who mainly performs in English. Active since 2007, she rose to prominence in 2009 with debut single, "Back It Up (Caro Emerald song), Back It Up". Follow-up single "A Night like This (song), A Night Like This" topped charts in several countries, including her native Netherlands. The debut Caro Emerald album, ''Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor,'' was released on 29 January 2010. By August 2010, the album had spent its 30th week at number one in the Dutch album charts, setting an all-time record and beating Michael Jackson's Thriller (Michael Jackson album), ''Thriller'' by one week. ''Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor'' is the debut album by Dutch singer Caro Emerald. The album was conceived, written and produced as a studio project by David Schreurs, Vincent Degiorgio, Jan van Wieringen and Caroline van der Leeuw, and released in the Netherlands with Emerald as the starring artist on 29 January 2010 on their own label Grandmono. The album was preceded by the hit singles "Back It Up (Caro Emerald song), Back It Up", officially released in the Netherlands on 6 July 2009, and "A Night Like This (song), A Night Like This", released on 11 December 2009. ''The Shocking Miss Emerald'' is the second studio album by Caro Emerald. The album was written and produced by David Schreurs, Vincent Degiorgio, Jan van Wieringen and Emerald, with contributions from Wieger Hoogendorp, Robin Veldman and Guy Chambers and released on 3 May 2013 on Grandmono Records. In the UK, the album was released by Dramatico. The album includes singles " Tangled Up" and " Liquid Lunch". In the UK, Emerald performed tracks from the album at BBC Radio Theatre, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 2 and on the BBC Red Button. "Back It Up" is the debut single by Caro Emerald taken from the debut album ''Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor''. It was released on 6 July 2009. The single was certified gold by the Federation of the Italian Music Industry. Background Emerald was originally hired as the demo singer for the song in 2007, by producers Jan van Wieringen and David Schreurs who had written the song with Robin Veldman and Vincent DeGiorgio. Caro's jazzy vocal style was considered a "perfect match" but the song remained unused until 2008, when Caro asked if she could add the song to her live repertoire. "A Night like This" is the second single by Caro Emerald, taken from the album ''Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor''. It was released on 11 December 2009 in the Netherlands after it was first presented in an online Martini commercial on 16 October. Being released in 2010 in Europe, including the UK where it peaked at Number 65 in the UK Singles Chart. It was added to the 'A' list on BBC Radio One. Writing and recording The song was written by David Schreurs and Vince Degiorgio. Schreurs told HitQuarters he created the track for "A Night like This" while Degiorgio packed his bags to leave for his hometown Toronto, and then the two "sat down for an hour and knocked out the song". Benjamin Jackson Porter "Jackie" Davis (December 13, 1920 – November 2, 1999) was an American soul jazz singer, organist and bandleader. He is notable for his contributions in bringing the Hammond organ to the forefront of jazz and pop, preceding the better-known Jimmy Smith by several years. Life and career Davis was born and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and started playing piano at the age of ten, before studying music at Florida A&M. He experimented with jazz on the pipe organ, before switching to the Hammond. He was influenced by Wild Bill Davis and Bill Doggett, and after a spell backing Louis Jordan, he started fronting his own jazz groups.
