Grandaddy
Grandaddy is an American indie rock band from Modesto, California. The group was formed in 1992, and featured Jason Lytle, Aaron Burtch, Jim Fairchild, Kevin Garcia and Tim Dryden, until Garcia's death in 2017 following a stroke. After several self-released records and cassettes, the band signed to Will Records in the US and later the V2 Records subsidiary Big Cat Records in the UK, going on to sign an exclusive deal with V2. The bulk of the band's recorded output was the work of Lytle, who worked primarily in home studios. Grandaddy released four studio albums before splitting in 2006, with band members going on to solo careers and other projects. Grandaddy reformed in 2012, made a number of live appearances and released its fifth studio album, '' Last Place'', in March 2017. ''Last Place'' is the fifth studio album by the American indie rock band Grandaddy, released on March 3, 2017 on 30th Century Records. Self-produced and recorded by the band's frontman and primary recording artist Jason Lytle, the album is the first by Grandaddy since ''Just Like the Fambly Cat'' (2006) and the band's prior break-up. Lyrically inspired by Lytle's divorce, the album was preceded by the singles "Way We Won't", "A Lost Machine" and "Evermore". This is the final album to feature Kevin Garcia on bass, as he would die of a stroke two months after its release. Jason Lytle
Jason Lytle ( ; born March 26, 1969) is an American musician best known for his work in the indie rock group Grandaddy. The group split in 2005, and Lytle continued to release music as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians. Grandaddy reformed in 2012 and stopped recording and touring again in 2017 following the death of one of the members. Biography Early life and Grandaddy Lytle was born in Modesto, California and has an older sister, one older brother, a sister (deceased) and a stepsister. His father was in the grocery business, and his mother a housewife; they divorced when Lytle was aged seven. A fan of music at an early age, he played drums as a child. Skateboarding captured his interest in his teens, and by his late teens Lytle was a sponsored amateur. Jim Fairchild
Kirby James Fairchild is an American guitarist and singer-songwriter. He is best known as the lead guitarist of the indie rock bands Grandaddy and Modest Mouse. Fairchild has released solo material under the pseudonym All Smiles. Biography Born in Fresno, California, Fairchild moved to Modesto at the age of two, and began to play guitar at the age of 14. He has lived in Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, Oregon, San Francisco, and New York City. Since 2014 he has lived in Los Angeles. Fairchild joined Grandaddy as guitarist in 1995, and remained with the band until they broke up in 2006. He is featured on the Giant Sand release, '' Cover Magazine''. In 2001, he was the touring guitarist with Giant Sand, who were the opening act for PJ Harvey. In 2005, Fairchild began touring as a guitarist in Modest Mouse before Johnny Marr joined the band. BNQT ( "banquet") is an indie super-group featuring Fran Healy ( Travis), Alex Kapranos ( Franz Ferdinand), Eric Pulido ( Midlake), Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses) and Jason Lytle ( Grandaddy), backed by other members of Midlake: Jesse Chandler, Joey McClellan and McKenzie Smith. Background The concept came to Pulido whilst he was touring Midlake’s 2013 album ''Antiphon''. Pulido wanted to gather a number of contrasting yet complementary artists he had befriended or shared the stage with and establish an environment in which they could collaborate. V2 Records (or V2 Music; V2 being an abbreviation for Virgin 2) is a record label that was purchased by Universal Music Group in 2007 and sold to IASin 2013. In the Benelux, V2 operates separately from PIAS, as the label bought itself out from Universal in 2007.
