Grand Ridge Rail Trail
The Grand Ridge Rail Trail or Mirboo North to Boolarra Rail Trail is a 13 kilometre rail trail in the Strzelecki Ranges of west central Gippsland, connecting the towns of Mirboo North and Boolarra. The route follows the line of the former Mirboo North railway line for the entire distance. In February 2009, the trail was closed due to bushfires burning out two bridges. Since then the bridges have been replaced and the trail has been re-opened with the official ceremony held in Feb 2012. Mirboo North
Mirboo North is a town in Victoria, Australia, located east of Melbourne, with a population of 1,697. It is in the South Gippsland Shire local government area. The town is at the start of the Grand Ridge Rail Trail, which travels for 13 km through temperate rainforest and dry sclerophyll forest in the Strzelecki Ranges. History The Mirboo area was settled by timber getters in the late 1870s, attracted particularly by the Mountain Ash. The original railway branch line from Morwell to Mirboo North was completed on 7 January 1886, with the last train being run on 22 June 1974. The railway was constructed through difficult hilly terrain requiring construction of massive embankments and numerous bridges. Strzelecki Ranges
The Strzelecki Ranges (pronounced STREHZ leckee) is a set of low mountain ridges located in the West Gippsland and South Gippsland regions of the Australian state of Victoria. The Ranges are named after Paweł Edmund Strzelecki, a Polish explorer, who with the assistance of Charley Tarra the small party's Aboriginal guide, led an expedition through this region in 1840. They also form a biogeographic subregion of the South Eastern Highlands. "Land of the Lyrebird" is also a common alternative name for the Strzelecki Ranges based on a popular 1920s book. Boolarra
Boolarra is a small township located in the Latrobe Valley, in central Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. At th2016 Census Boolarra had a population of 973 with 48% males and 52% females and an average age of 50. The Boolarra Folk Festival is held in the town every year in March and attracts music lovers from around Australia and the world. The town is also infamous for producing the Boolarra strain of carp (''Cyprinus carpio'') which, after their release into the Murray River near Mildura, spread throughout Australia. The name Boolarra is believed to be derived from an expression in one of the local Aboriginal languages meaning 'plentiful' or 'twenty'. Mirboo North Railway Line
The Mirboo North railway line was a country branch line in Victoria, Australia. It branched from the main Gippsland line at Morwell station, and opened in three stages from 1885 to 1886. The stations along the line were Hazelwood, Yinnar, Boolarra, Darlimurla and Mirboo North. The line remained in continuous service until it was closed in 1974, although the passenger service ceased in 1968. The section between Boolarra and Mirboo North has been converted into the Grand Ridge Rail Trail. The Black Saturday bushfires were a series of bushfires that either ignited or were already burning across the Australian state of Victoria on and around Saturday, 7 February 2009, and were among Australia's all-time worst bushfire disasters.
