Grand Circuit
The Grand Circuit, also known as the "Big Wheel", is a group of harness racing stakes races run at various race tracks around the United States. Run on one-mile tracks, it is "the oldest continuing horse-racing series in the United States." The series was started in 1871 by Colonel Billy Edwards, of Cleveland, Ohio, L.J. Powers of Springfield, Massachusetts, E.A. Buck of Buffalo, New York, and later C.W. Hutchinson of Utica, New York. The first meeting of the Circuit was held in 1873 in Cleveland, followed by races in Springfield, Buffalo, and Utica. It was originally named "The Quadrilateral Trotting Combination," but was renamed when additional legs were added. In 1914 the Grand Circuit consisted of six tracks: Cleveland, Ohio, Columbus, Ohio, Lexington, Kentucky, Detroit, Michigan, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Kalamazoo, Michigan. Goldsmith Maid
Goldsmith Maid (1857 – September 23, 1885) was a prominent Standardbred racemare in the 1870s that was called the "Queen of the Trotters" and had a harness racing career that spanned 13 years. Her last race was won at the age of 20 against a much younger horse named Rarus. She was inducted into the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame, Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 1953. Bloodlines and early life Goldsmith Maid was originally named Maid and was foaled in the spring of 1857 at the Deckertown, New Jersey farm of John B. Decker. Decker had purchased Maid's dam Old Ab (sired by Abdallah, the sire of Hambletonian 10) in 1853 from a hat peddler and, taken with the mare's even temperament, had bred her to Alexander's Abdallah (formerly known as Edsell's Hambeletonian) in the hopes of producing a fine farm colt (horse), colt.Porter and Coates. Rockingham Park
Rockingham Park was a horse racing establishment in Salem, New Hampshire, in the United States. First built in 1906, it was used as an area for many to gamble on the weekends. Seabiscuit raced there in 1935 and 1936,''Daily Racing Form'' staff (2005). ''Champions: The Lives, Times, and Past Performances of America's Greatest Thoroughbreds, Revised Edition''. New York, NY: Daily Racing Form Press and Mom's Command ran in her first race and gained her first victory there in 1984. Rockingham Park also hosted simulcasting and charity gaming. The last live horse racing at the track occurred in 2009. Rockingham Park closed its doors for good on August 31, 2016, and was sold for redevelopment of the property. The Historic Track is a half-mile (900 m) harness racing track in Goshen, New York.
