Gran Castello Historic House
The Gran Castello Historic House (Maltese: ''Dar Storika tal-Gran Kastell''), formerly known as the Folklore Museum, is a historic house museum dedicated to Gozitan folklore in Victoria, Gozo, Malta. It is located within a cluster of 16th-century houses in the Cittadella, the oldest part of the city of Victoria; the houses were rehabilitated as a museum in 1983. The museum's collections relate to the domestic, rural and traditional ways of life in the agrarian economy of the Maltese Islands and the many skills, crafts and traditions that have shaped everyday life on the islands over the centuries. The architectural features of the buildings housing the museum are in Sicilian style, and may owe something to the influence of the Chiaramonte family of Sicily and southern Italy when they were Counts of Malta in the late 14th century. The Cittadella (), also known as the Castello (), is the citadel of Victoria, Gozo, Victoria on the island of Gozo, Malta. The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and the site now occupied by the Cittadella is believed to have been the acropolis of the Phoenicia, Punic-Ancient Rome, Roman city of ''Gaulos'' or ''Glauconis Civitas''. During the Middle Ages, medieval period, the acropolis was converted into a castle which served as a refuge for Gozo's population. A suburb began to develop outside its walls by the 15th century, and this area now forms the historic core of Victoria. Heritage Malta () is the Maltese national agency for museums, conservation practice and cultural heritage. Created by the Cultural Heritage Act, enacted in 2002, the national agency (along with the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage) replaced the former Museums Department. The Chiaramonte are a noble family of Sicily. They became the most powerful and wealthy family in Sicily. In the 13th century the marriage of Manfredi Chiaramonte to Isabella Mosca, united the two Sicilian counties of Modica and Ragusa.
