Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August Graf Von Zeppelin
Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin (german: Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August Graf von Zeppelin; 8 July 1838 – 8 March 1917) was a German general and later inventor of the Zeppelin rigid airships. His name soon became synonymous with airships and dominated long-distance flight until the 1930s. He founded the company Luftschiffbau Zeppelin. Family and personal life Ferdinand was the scion of a noble family. Zepelin, the family's eponymous hometown, is a small community outside the town of Bützow in Mecklenburg. Ferdinand was the son of Württemberg Minister and Hofmarschall Friedrich Jerôme Wilhelm Karl Graf von Zeppelin (1807–1886) and his wife Amélie Françoise Pauline (born Macaire d'Hogguer) (1816–1852). Ferdinand spent his childhood with his sister and brother at their Girsberg manor near Konstanz, where he was educated by private tutors. Ferdinand married Isabella Freiin von Wolff in Berlin. She was from the house of Alt-Schwanenburg (located in the present-day t ...

Amethé Von Zeppelin
Countess Amethé Gwendolen Marion Mackenzie von Zeppelin, born Amethé Smeaton c. 1896, was a British woman who married into the Zeppelin family and was known as a translator of philosophical works from German to English. She also co-translated Werner Heisenberg's ''Die Physik der Atomkerne'' into English in 1953. She was considered by the British security services to have been anti-British before the Second World War and to have made an anti-British or propaganda radio broadcast from Vienna in September 1939. Later in the war she was closely associated with members of the Von Pott Nazi espionage group in Vienna but her exact involvement in their activities, if any, is unclear. Early life and family Amethé Smeaton was born in Rangoon, Burma, around 1896, the daughter of Donald Mackenzie Smeaton, a British official in Burma and later a member of Parliament for the Liberal Party. LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin
LZ 127 ''Graf Zeppelin'' () was a German passenger-carrying, hydrogen-filled rigid airship that flew from 1928 to 1937. It offered the first commercial transatlantic passenger flight service. Named after the German airship pioneer Ferdinand von Zeppelin, a count () in the German nobility, it was conceived and operated by Dr. Hugo Eckener, the chairman of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin. ''Graf Zeppelin'' made 590 flights totalling almost 1.7 million kilometres (over 1 million miles). It was operated by a crew of 36, and could carry 24 passengers. It was the longest and largest airship in the world when it was built. It made the first circumnavigation of the world by airship, and the first nonstop crossing of the Pacific Ocean by air; its range was enhanced by its use of Blau gas as a fuel. It was built using funds raised by public subscription and from the German government, and its operating costs were offset by the sale of special postage stamps to collectors, the support o ...

LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin II
The ''Graf Zeppelin'' (; Registration: D-LZ 130) was the last of the German rigid airships built by Zeppelin Luftschiffbau during the period between the World Wars, the second and final ship of the ''Hindenburg'' class, and the second zeppelin to carry the name "Graf Zeppelin" (after the LZ 127) and thus often referred to as ''Graf Zeppelin II''. Due to the United States refusal to export helium to Germany, the ''Graf Zeppelin II'' was filled with hydrogen and therefore never carried commercial passengers. It made 30 flights over 11 months in 1938–39, many being propaganda publicity flights; but staff of the Reich Air Ministry were aboard to conduct radio surveillance and measurements. The airship, along with its LZ 127 namesake were both scrapped in April 1940, and their duralumin framework salvaged to build aircraft for the Luftwaffe. Design and development The ''Graf Zeppelin II'' was virtually identical to the ''Hindenburg'', and was originally designed to use hyd ...

Graf Zeppelin-class Aircraft Carrier
The ''Graf Zeppelin''-class aircraft carriers were four German ''Kriegsmarine'' aircraft carriers planned in the mid-1930s by Grand Admiral Erich Raeder as part of the Plan Z rearmament program after Germany and Great Britain signed the Anglo-German Naval Agreement. They were planned after a thorough study of Japanese carrier designs. German naval architects ran into difficulties due to lack of experience in building such vessels, the situational realities of carrier operations in the North Sea and the lack of overall clarity in the ships' mission objectives. This lack of clarity led to features such as cruiser-type guns for commerce raiding and defense against British cruisers, that were either eliminated from or not included in American and Japanese carrier designs. American and Japanese carriers, designed along the lines of task-force defense, used supporting cruisers for surface firepower, which allowed flight operations to continue without disruption and kept carriers out of ...

German Aircraft Carrier Graf Zeppelin
The German aircraft carrier ''Graf Zeppelin'' was the lead ship in a class of two carriers of the same name ordered by the ''Kriegsmarine'' of Nazi Germany. She was the only aircraft carrier launched by Germany and represented part of the ''Kriegsmarine''s attempt to create a well-balanced oceangoing fleet, capable of projecting German naval power far beyond the narrow confines of the Baltic and North Seas. The carrier would have had a complement of 42 fighters and dive bombers. Construction on ''Graf Zeppelin'' began on 28 December 1936, when her keel was laid down at the Deutsche Werke shipyard in Kiel. Named in honor of ''Graf'' (Count) Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the ship was launched on 8 December 1938, and was 85% complete by the outbreak of World War II in September 1939. ''Graf Zeppelin'' was not completed and was never operational due to shifting construction priorities necessitated by the war. She remained in the Baltic for the duration of the war; with Germany's defe ...

Marineflieger
The ''Marinefliegerkommando'' (Naval Aviation Command) is the naval air arm of the German Navy. History During the First World War, naval aviators were part of the . After the war Germany was no longer allowed to maintain a military aviation capability. Heer and Marine both attempted to nevertheless maintain theoretical and practical knowledge of air warfare through concealed activities such as pilot training efforts. After the National Socialists had risen to power, these activities intensified until Nazi Germany unilaterally declared its withdrawal from armament limitations in 1935. The nascent rump naval air arm was quickly absorbed by Hermann Göring's newly established , much to the navies chagrin. However, as a component of the air force, the ''Seeflieger'' maintained their organisational structure. A carrier-based aviation component was planned for the aircraft carrier ''Graf Zeppelin'', laid down in 1936, but lack of suitable aircraft, coupled with the reluctance of t ...

The 1930 ''Graf Zeppelin'' stamps were a set of three airmail postage stamps, each depicting the image of the '' Graf Zeppelin'', issued by the United States Post Office Department in 1930, exclusively for delivery of mail carried aboard that airship. Although the stamps were valid for postage on mail sent on the Zeppelin Pan American flight from Germany to the United States, via Brazil, the set was marketed to collectors and was largely intended to promote the route. 93.5% of the revenue generated by the sale of these stamps went to the Zeppelin Airship Works in Germany. The Graf Zepplin stamps were issued as a gesture of goodwill toward Germany. Mystic Stamp Company, 1930 Graf Zeppelins The three stamps were used briefly and then withdrawn from sale.
