Grace McArthur
Grace McArthur (1899–2015) was a Michigan-based folk artist known for the top-to-bottom oil paintings she created later in life. Biography Grace Helen Bell was born to Helena Velt and Wilhelm Bell in Detroit, Michigan on March 15, 1898. Grace married then- medical student Stewart Coyles McArthur in 1916 in Detroit. The pair lived there just long enough to have two children, before moving north to the Mount Pleasant area in the village of Rosebush. Little is known about her life from this point until she began painting at the age of 50. Grace McArthur created hundreds of folk oil paintings in Michigan between 1948 and 1973. She never painted the same scene twice, and would always refuse if a customer requested an identical copy of one of her previous paintings. Grace McArthur died October 17, 1986, in Mount Pleasant, Michigan when she was 87. Oil Painting
Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. It has been the most common technique for artistic painting on wood panel or canvas for several centuries, spreading from Europe to the rest of the world. The advantages of oil for painting images include "greater flexibility, richer and denser colour, the use of layers, and a wider range from light to dark". But the process is slower, especially when one layer of paint needs to be allowed to dry before another is applied. The oldest known oil paintings were created by Buddhist artists in Afghanistan and date back to the 7th century AD. The technique of binding pigments in oil was later brought to Europe in the 15th century, about 900 years later. Rochester, Michigan
Rochester is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. It is a northern suburb in Metro Detroit located 20 miles north of the city of Detroit. Rochester was the first European settlement in Oakland County when it was founded in 1818. Meadow Brook Hall
Meadow Brook Hall is a Tudor revival style mansion located at 350 Estate Drive in Rochester Hills, Michigan. It was built between 1926 and 1929 by the heiress to the Dodge automaker fortune, Matilda Dodge Wilson and her second husband, lumber baron, Alfred Wilson. Covering with 110 rooms, the structure is the fourth largest historic mansion museum in the United States, and is classified as one of America's Castles. In 1957, the mansion and the surrounding property and buildings were donated to the state of Michigan in order to fund Michigan State University–Oakland, now known as Oakland University. ''Ford Times'' was a monthly publication produced by Ford Motor Company. The first issue was published on April 15, 1908, until April 1917, ceasing publication with America's entry into World War I. After a more than 20-year break, Ford Times resumed publishing in 1943. This iteration of the magazine would last 50 years until January 1993. Grandma Moses
Anna Mary Robertson Moses (September 7, 1860 – December 13, 1961), or Grandma Moses, was an American folk artist. She began painting in earnest at the age of 78 and is a prominent example of a newly successful art career at an advanced age. Her works have been shown and sold worldwide, including in museums, and have been merchandised such as on greeting cards. ''Sugaring Off'' was sold for in 2006.
