Gozo Party
The Gozo Party ( mt, Partit Għawdxi) was a political party in Malta. History The party was established in founded in April 1947 by Francesco Masini. In the October 1947 general elections it contested the 8th District, which covered Gozo, nominating seven candidates. Of the five seats in the district, it won three of them, with Anton Calleja, Guzeppi Cefai and Masini elected to represent the party. Francesco Masini
Francesco Masini (December 6, 1894 – July 9, 1962) was a lawyer and politician from the island of Gozo, Malta. In 1947, he founded the Gozo Party, and was elected to the Maltese Legislative Assembly together with two other party members. Early life and family Francesco Masini was born in Victoria, Gozo, on December 6, 1894, son of Dr. Giuseppe Masini and Francesca née Calleja. Educated first at the Gozo Seminary, then at the University of Malta, he graduated Doctor of Laws on December 17, 1919. Soon after graduating, he started serving at the Gozo Law Courts, becoming one of the just three lawyers practicing at the time. On July 11, 1926, Dr. Masini married Elena Grech, and had four children in all: Mary Rosaria (known as Rose), Joseph, Franco, and George. 1947 Maltese General Election
General elections were held in Malta between 25 and 27 October 1947.Dieter Nohlen & Philip Stöver (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p1302 They were the first elections held under universal suffrage for women and Agatha Barbara became the first woman elected to Parliament. These elections saw the Labour Party win 24 of the 40 seats. Electoral system The elections were held using the single transferable vote system. Property qualifications for voters were abolished, and women were also allowed to vote for the first time. Gozo
Gozo (, ), Maltese: ''Għawdex'' () and in antiquity known as Gaulos ( xpu, 𐤂𐤅𐤋, ; grc, Γαῦλος, Gaúlos), is an island in the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is part of the Republic of Malta. After the island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago. As of 2021, the island has a population of around 31,232 (out of Malta's total 443,227), and its inhabitants are known as Gozitans ( mt, Għawdxin).
