Gormley
Gormley () is an Irish surname. It is derived from the Gaelic ''Ó Goirmleadhaigh'' meaning 'descendant of Gormghal'. The main sept of the clan originated in Tyrconnell (present day County Donegal) and then spread into Tyrone. The Ulster branch of the clan were chiefs of the '' Cenél Moain'' and originated in what is now the barony of Raphoe in East Donegal, an area known in Gaelic times as ''Tír Moain''. The common ancestor and progenitor of these Gormleys was Moain son of Muireadach, son of Eoghan, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. Different septs and spellings In the ''Annals of the Four Masters'' and in the ''Topographical Poems'' of O'Dugan and O'Heerin, the name is spelt ''Ó Goirmleadhaigh''; the ''Annals of Loch Cé'' write it ''Ó Gormshuil'' and ''Ó Gormshuiligh'': the editor (William Hennessy) writing in 1871 states that the latter was then anglicised O'Gormooly, but Gormley is universal today. Sir Antony Mark David Gormley (born 30 August 1950) is a British sculptor. His works include the ''Angel of the North'', a public sculpture in Gateshead in the north of England, commissioned in 1994 and erected in February 1998; ''Another Place'' on Crosby Beach near Liverpool; and ''Event Horizon'', a multipart site installation which premiered in London in 2007, then subsequently in Madison Square in New York City (2010), São Paulo (2012) and Hong Kong (2015–16). Brandon Gormley (born February 18, 1992) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who is currently an unrestricted free agent. He most recently played for the Iserlohn Roosters of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). He was selected 13th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. During his junior career, he was named to the QMJHL All-Rookie Team, is a two-time QMJHL Second Team All-Star and won the President's Cup with the Wildcats in 2010. Eddie Gormley (born 23 October 1968) is an Irish football coach and former player who manages Cabinteely. Early career Educated at Cabinteely Community School where he played for the School Junior & Senior teams, and also playing schoolboy football with St Joseph's Boys, Gormley joined League of Ireland side Bray Wanderers in the summer of 1987. He made his League of Ireland debut for Bray at Derry City F.C. on the opening day of the 1987–88 League of Ireland Premier Division season on 13 September 1987. He scored his first league goal at Dalymount Park on 9 October. After only a handful of appearances Gormley impressed in a trial at Tottenham Hotspur and was signed on a three-year contract in November 1987. Jody Gormley (16 August 1971 – 9 December 2024) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played for the Tyrone and London county teams. Enda Gormley
Enda Gormley (born 8 March 1966) is a Gaelic footballer who played for the Derry county team in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. He played club football with Maghera club Glen, and currently plays with Belfast club Bredagh. Conor Gormley
Conor Gormley (born 10 October 1980) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer for the Carrickmore St Colmcille's club and the Tyrone county team. With his county, Gormley won three-time All-Ireland Senior Football Championship titles and three All Stars Awards in 2003, 2005 and 2008. Robert Gormley (August 3, 1918 – December 11, 2003) was an American soccer forward who spent seventeen years in the American Soccer League. He also earned one cap with the U.S. national team in 1954. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1989. Gormley was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he began playing youth soccer with the Lighthouse Boys Club before moving to another local club, the McKinley Soccer Club. Charles Gormley (19 December 1937 – 22 September 2005) was a Scottish film director and screenwriter. Biography Having found a liking towards film, he left his job as an optician and joined the International Film Associates in the mid-1960s.
