West Texas League
The West Texas League was a Class D level minor league baseball league that existed from 1920 to 1922 and from 1928 to 1929. 1920-1922 The following teams played in 1920: Abilene Eagles, Ranger Nitros, Mineral Wells Resorters, Cisco Scouts, Gorman Buddies/Sweetwater Swatters and Eastland Judges. The Abilene Eagles beat the Ranger Nitros in the playoffs to win the league championship. For the 1921 season, the Swatters, Eagles, Resorters, Nitros and Scouts returned to the league. The Resorters moved to Ballinger to become the Ballinger Bearcats. The Cisco Scouts changed their name to the Cisco Orphans. The Eastland Judges left the league and a new team, the San Angelo Bronchos, joined. The Abilene Eagles won their second championship in a row, beating the Swatters. Gorman is a city in Eastland County, Texas, United States. Its population was 1,083 at the 2010 census, down from 1,236 at the 2000 census. Geography Gorman is located in southeastern Eastland County at (32.211956, –98.671281). Texas State Highway 6 passes through the community, leading northwest to Eastland, the county seat, and southeast to De Leon. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land. Sweetwater, Texas
Sweetwater is a municipality in and the seat of Nolan County, Texas, United States. It is 123 miles southeast of Lubbock and 40 miles west of Abilene, Texas. Its population was 10,906 at the 2010 census. History The town's name "Sweetwater" is the English translation of the Kiowa language word "Mobeetie". Sweetwater received a U.S. post office in 1879. The Texas and Pacific Railway started service in 1881, with the first train arriving on March 12 of that year, beginning Sweetwater's long history as a railroad town. To encourage the railroads, Sweetwater increased its water supply by building a small town lake called City Lake in 1898 (now called Newman Park), then three larger lakes were constructed thereafter. Construction began on the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway in 1903. Guy Sturdy
Guy R. Sturdy (August 7, 1899 – May 4, 1965) was a professional baseball player. He was a first baseman over parts of two seasons (1927–1928) with the St. Louis Browns. For his career, he compiled a .288 batting average and one home run in 66 at-bats, with 13 runs batted in. Sturdy was born in Sherman, Texas. After his playing careers, he managed in the minor leagues for 12 seasons, including one season in his hometown, leading the Sherman Twins to a 70–70 record in 1946. Eastland County is a county located in central West Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 17,725. The county seat is Eastland. The county was founded in 1858 and later organized in 1873. It is named for William Mosby Eastland, a soldier during the Texas Revolution and the only officer to die as a result of the "Black Bean executions" of the Mier Expedition.
