Goree Independent School District
Goree Independent School District was a public school district based in Goree, Texas ( USA). The district consisted of a single campus - Goree School - that served students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve. It was located in southeastern Knox County and extended into northeastern Haskell and northwestern Throckmorton counties. Goree School was the 1972 and 1973 Texas eight-man football state champions. The eight-man title was contested for only four years (1972 through 1975); thus, Goree won 50 percent of the titles. District enrollment (1989-2003) The ethnic composition of students in the 2002-2003 school year was 34 Hispanic (72%), 9 White (19%), and 4 African American (9%). Of the 47 students, 45 (95.7%) were considered economically disadvantaged. Goree, Texas
Goree is a city in Knox County, Texas, United States. The population was 203 at the 2010 census, down from 321 at the 2000 census. A July 1, 2013 U.S. Census Bureau estimate placed the population at 207. Geography Goree is located at (33.468707, –99.523874). It is situated at the junction of U.S. Highway 277 and FM 266 in southeastern Knox County, approximately 84 miles north of Abilene. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. History Settlers first arrived in the area around 1886. By 1887, a settlement was centered around a store and post office built by Bill Benedict. Originally known as Riley Springs, the community was renamed Goree after Robert D. Throckmorton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 1,440. Its county seat is Throckmorton. The county was created in 1858 and later organized in 1879. It is named for William Throckmorton, an early Collin County settler. Throckmorton County is one of six prohibition, or entirely dry, counties in Texas. History Spanish explorer Pedro Vial is considered to be the earliest European to travel through what is now known as Throckmorton County. Eight-man football is a form of gridiron football, generally played by high schools with smaller enrollments. Eight-man football differs from the traditional 11-man game with the reduction of three players on each side of the ball and a field width that can be reduced to 40 yards, 13 1/3 yards narrower than the 53 1/3-yard 11-man field. Texas Assessment Of Academic Skills
The TAAS, or Texas Assessment of Academic Skills, was the third standardized test used in Texas between 1991 and 2002, when it was replaced by the TAKS test from 2003 to 2013. It was used from grades 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Passing the Grade 11 level was required for graduation, but many opportunities for retesting were available. The implementation of the TAAS was the first time a state-mandated exam was required to be passed for graduation. There were many alternative routes available for students unable to pass the TAAS. The TAAS tested 3 areas of proficiency: reading, writing, and math. The math and reading sections consisted of multiple-choice, while the writing section consisted of a series of prompts for which essays had to be written. In 2002, researchers Jere Confrey and David Carrejo presented a paper that criticized the TAAS.
