Gordon Stockade
Gordon Stockade, originally called Fort Defiance, was a stockade fortification on French Creek (Cheyenne River tributary), French Creek in the Black Hills, located today off of U.S. 16 near Custer, South Dakota, United States. It was erected in December 1874 by the Gordon Party, an expedition of white settlers who travelled to the Black Hills at the beginning of the Black Hills gold rush, gold rush, on the site of a previous encampment by George Armstrong Custer's Black Hills Expedition. The party's settlement of the area was illegal under the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868), 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie and the group was removed by the United States Army in April 1875, who subsequently began using the Gordon Stockade as a base. Custer State Park
Custer State Park is a South Dakota State Park and wildlife reserve in the Black Hills of the United States. Located in Custer County, the park is South Dakota's first and largest state park, named after Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. The park covers an area of over of varied terrain including rolling prairie grasslands and rugged mountains. The park is home to a herd of 1,500 bison. Elk, coyotes, mule deer, white tailed deer, mountain goats, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, river otters, pronghorn, cougars, and feral burros also inhabit the park. Richland Center is a city in Richland County, Wisconsin, United States and is the county seat. The population was 5,114 at the 2020 census. History Richland Center was founded in 1851 by Ira S. Haseltine from Andover, Vermont, northwest of Brattleboro.
