Gordon Bess
Gordon C. Bess (January 12, 1929 – November 24, 1989) was an American cartoonist, best known for the comic strip ''Redeye''. Born in Richfield, Utah, Bess grew up attending schools in Nevada, Oregon, and Utah, finishing high school in Hailey, Idaho. In 1947, he enlisted in the Marines and was sent to boot camp in San Diego. He created illustrations, posters and charts for the Corps Training Aids Section in San Diego. After a year of service in South Korea, clearing minefields, he arrived back in San Francisco on the day the war ended. In 1954, he was sent to Washington, D.C., where he became a staff cartoonist and the cartoon editor for ''Leatherneck Magazine'', where Joanne Vaught was an administrative assistant. The two married in 1955, living in Arlington, Virginia. Continuing with ''Leatherneck'' until 1956, he left the Corps with the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1957, he moved to New Jersey. Richfield is a city in and the county seat of Sevier County, Utah, United States, and is the largest city in southern-central Utah. Description As of the 2020 census, the city population was 8,201. It lies in the Mormon Corridor, just off Interstate 70, approximately east of its junction with Interstate 15. The county can be best described as "rural diversified" due to the convergence of agricultural, retail and industrial activities. Richfield has developed as a regional tourist center because it is located on the interstate freeway about halfway between Los Angeles, California and Denver, Colorado, attracting many automobile travelers who stop at the city. ''Tintin'' (; ) was a weekly Belgian comics magazine of the second half of the 20th century. Subtitled ''"The Magazine for the Youth from 7 to 77"'', it was one of the major publications of the Franco-Belgian comics scene and published such notable series as ''Blake and Mortimer'', ''Alix'', and the principal title ''The Adventures of Tintin''. Originally published by Le Lombard, the first issue was released in 1946, and it ceased publication in 1993. ''Tintin'' magazine was part of an elaborate publishing scheme. The magazine's primary content focused on a new page or two from several forthcoming comic albums that had yet to be published as a whole, thus drawing weekly readers who could not bear to wait for entire albums. The Angoulême International Comics Festival (AICF; ) is the second largest comics festival in Europe after the Lucca Comics & Games in Italy, and the third biggest in the world after Lucca Comics & Games and the Comiket of Japan. Lowman is a small rural census-designated place in Boise County, Idaho, United States. It is nestled along the north bank of the South Fork of the Payette River in the central part of the state, at an elevation of above sea level. As of the 2010 census, its population was 42. History The community was named for a homesteader, Nathaniel Winfield Lowman, from Polk County, Iowa, who settled there in 1907. Lowman is notable for having a one-room school, one of only a couple hundred still in use in the United States. A devastating wildfire ravaged the area around Lowman in 1989; it destroyed over and 26 structures, but without injuries or fatalities.
