Gordon Aikman
Gordon Lewis Aikman BEM (2 April 1985 – 2 February 2017) was a British political researcher and campaigner. He was Director of Research for the Better Together campaign during the Scottish Independence Referendum. During that campaign he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. Aikman successfully lobbied the Scottish Government to double the number of MND nurses in Scotland, and to fund them via the NHS. He also raised more than £500,000 for medical research. Early life Gordon Aikman studied at Kirkcaldy High School where he was head boy. He read Business at the University of Edinburgh. In 2007, he was elected as the sabbatical officer responsible for welfare and student societies in the Edinburgh University Students' Association. British Empire Medal
The British Empire Medal (BEM; formerly British Empire Medal for Meritorious Service) is a British and Commonwealth award for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown. The current honour was created in 1922 to replace the original medal, which had been established in 1917 as part of the Order of the British Empire. Award The British Empire Medal is granted in recognition of meritorious civil or military service. Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters "BEM". Since December 1918, the honour has been divided into civil and military divisions in a similar way to the Order of the British Empire itself. While recipients are not members of the Order, the medal is affiliated to it. ScotRail ( gd, Rèile na h-Alba) has been the brand name used for all Scotland, Scottish regional and commuter rail services, including some cross-border services, since September 1983, as well as many of the country’s intercity services. Since 2008, it is the permanent name of the Scottish commuter rail service, regardless of the train operating company that operates them. The ScotRail service was re-nationalised on April 1st 2022. Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre
The Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre is a category B listed performing arts and lecture theatre located in the historic George Square in Edinburgh. Primarily operated as a lecture theatre for the University of Edinburgh, it is also used for general theatre performances, as well as being a designated Edinburgh Fringe Festival venue. In 2018 the University changed the name of the theatre - previously known as George Square Theatre - in memory of Gordon Aikman, a graduate of the University's Business School who raised more than £500,000 for research funding into motor neurone disease. Construction of the Modernist style theatre was completed in 1970, and opened to the general public the same year. The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) is the national membership body for Scotland’s charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises. SCVO works to support people to take voluntary action to help themselves and others, and to bring about social change. Kingdom FM is a radio station serving Fife. It is owned and operated by Dc. Thomson Media and broadcasts from studios at Elizabeth House in Kirkcaldy. The station broadcasts on five FM frequencies: 95.2 (Dunfermline and West Fife), 96.1 (Glenrothes, Central and East Fife), 96.6 (Kirkcaldy), 105.4 (St Andrews and 106.3 FM (the East Neuk). Scottish Politician of the Year is an annual award established in 1999. It is held by '' The Herald'' newspaper in Prestonfield House, Edinburgh. Although the awards ceremony has been held once at the Royal Museum, Prestonfield House Hotel is considered to be the home of the event. ''The Sunday Times'' is a British newspaper whose circulation makes it the largest in Britain's quality press market category. It was founded in 1821 as ''The New Observer''.
