The Order of Good Hope or Order of the Cape of Good Hope is a dormant order of merit of the Republic of South Africa. History The Order of Good Hope was founded in 1973, by the republican government of South Africa, to grant those who had distinguished themselves in the promotion of international relationships and to have sensibilised the general interest towards South Africa. HMS Good Hope (1901)
HMS ''Good Hope'' was one of four ''Drake''-class armoured cruisers built for the Royal Navy around 1900; she was originally named ''Africa'', but was renamed before she was launched. She became flagship of the 1st Cruiser Squadron of the Atlantic Fleet in 1906, and was the flagship of the 2nd Cruiser Squadron in 1908. She was reduced to reserve in 1913, but was recommissioned in mid-1914. When war was declared in August 1914, ''Good Hope'' was ordered to reinforce the 4th Cruiser Squadron and became the flagship of Rear Admiral Christopher Cradock. Cradock moved the available ships of his squadron later that month to the coast of South America to search for German commerce raiders. He was then ordered further south to the Strait of Magellan to block any attempt of the German East Asia Squadron to penetrate into the South Atlantic. Four ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS ''Good Hope''. *The first , of 35 guns, was captured by the French in May 1665. *The second , of 6 guns, was a flyboat captured from the Dutch in 1665 and sold in 1667. * The third was a armoured cruiser launched in 1901 and sunk in 1914 at the Battle of Coronel. ** The fourth was a "stone ship", or land-based naval officer training base, located at Sea View, a few kilometers outside of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It was situated in a newly built luxury hotel (The Seaview Hotel) and had a golf course, a tidal swimming pool and a tennis court. Officially Good Hope Mountain but commonly known as Mount Good Hope is one of the principal summits of the Pacific Ranges of the southern Coast Mountains in British Columbia, Canada. It stands immediately west of Chilko Lake, with the highest peak on the massif rising between the lake's southern arms. West of Mount Good Hope is the upper valley of the Southgate River, which drains to Bute Inlet near the mouth of the Homathko River; across the Southgate to the west is the Homathko Icefield, one of the largest ice-masses in the Coast Mountains. Good Hope School (GHS; ) is a prestigious girls' school in Hong Kong with primary and secondary sections, founded in 1954. It is conducted by Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (M.I.C.).
