The EL class are a class of diesel locomotives built by A Goninan & Co, Broadmeadow for Australian National in 1990–1991. History In June 1989, Australian National awarded a contract for 14 Dash 8 locomotives to A Goninan & Co with the first delivered in July 1990. Even though they were the most powerful locomotives to have operated by Australian National, they were fitted with lightweight traction motors which reduced their tractive effort by 33% compared to the preceding DL class locomotives. The 2600 class were a class of diesel locomotive built by A Goninan & Co, Townsville for Queensland Rail in 1983-1984. History The 2600 class entered service on the McNaughton and Newlands lines. They were based at Pring depot near Bowen, and were a standard General Electric export model (similar locomotives were also used in Brazil, Nigeria and Tunisia). NR Class
The NR class are a class of Australian diesel locomotive built by A Goninan & Co for National Rail between 1996 and 1998. They are currently operated by Pacific National. The C44aci model locomotives built by UGL Rail at Broadmeadow adopted the design from the NR Class. History When National Rail commenced operations in April 1993, it inherited a diverse collection of rolling stock and locomotives from various operators to operate interstate freight services in Australia. The fleet included locomotives of mixed age and power, leased from FreightCorp, V/Line and Australian National. Howard Smith Limited was an Australian industrial company. Founded in 1854 as a shipping company, it later diversified into coal mining, steel production, stevedoring, travel, railway rolling stock building, sugar production and retail. Its divisions began to be sold off in the 1990s with the remainder taken over by Wesfarmers in August 2001. Shipping On 7 July 1854 Captain William Howard Smith arrived in Melbourne from England as skipper of the 177 ton steamer ''Express'' in which he held a 50% share along with the ship's engineer, SB Skinner. Queensland Railways 2800 Class
The 2800 class are a class of diesel locomotive built by A Goninan & Co, Townsville for Queensland Rail between 1995 and 1998. They are currently owned by Aurizon, with the exception of one owned by Watco Australia, and operate on the North Coast and Mount Isa lines. History The 2800 class were ordered to haul passenger and freight services on the North Coast line between Rockhampton and Cairns and on the Great Northern line between Townsville and Mount Isa. The initial order for 40 was later increased to 50. However, a miscommunication resulted in the builder's plates incorrectly being stamped as 202 to 211 which had been used by other A Goninan & Co locomotives, rather than the correct 323 to 332. They now operate trains as far south as Brisbane. They are the only double ended diesel electric locomotives to have been built for Queensland Rail. Westrail P Class
The P class are a class of diesel locomotives built by UGL Rail, A Goninan & Co, Bassendean, Western Australia, Bassendean for Westrail between 1989 and 1991. History In 1988, Westrail placed an order for 15 CM25-8 GE Dash 8 Series, Dash 8 locomotives for bulk grain and general freight haulage with UGL Rail, A Goninan & Co. A 16th was later ordered followed by a 17th funded by AMC Mineral Sands. In 1997, the class was fitted with Locotrol equipment to allow them to operate in top and tail formation. All were included in the sale of Westrail to Australian Railroad Group in December 2000, with the class redesignated as the 2500 class. Commonwealth Engineering (often shortened to Com-Eng, later Comeng was an Australian engineering company that designed and built railway locomotives, rolling stock and trams. History Smith and Waddington, the predecessor to Commonwealth Engineering, was founded in 1921, in the Sydney suburb of Camperdown, as a body builder for custom motor cars. It went bankrupt in the Depression, and was reformed as Waddingtons Body Works and the main factory was moved to Granville, after a fire in the main workshop. The Government of Australia took control of the company during World War II as the company was in serious financial difficulties but had many government orders in its books.
