Gonda Betrix
Gonda Betrix (nee. Butters) is a South African Equestrian Coach and a retired equestrian athlete. She is renowned for representing South Africa at the 1992 Summer Olympics in individual show jumping and for winning every major South African equestrian show jumping title. She is considered one of the best showjumpers of her era. Athletic Career Gonda was born in 1943 and started riding from the age of 4. In 1951, at the age of 8, she won her first title as the Under 18 show Jumping Championship at the Western Province Agricultural Show. During the first few years of her career, Gonda trained under Charlotte Stubbs. Charlotte Stubbs is considered one of the founders of South African Equitation as she introduced the sport to South Africa in 1970. South Africa competed at the Summer Olympic Games for the first time since 1960 at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. South Africa was permitted to re-join the Olympic Movement after its citizens voted to abolish apartheid. 93 competitors, 68 men and 25 women, took part in 87 events in 19 sports. Flag, anthem and team logo As a result of a dispute over what flag and anthem to use, the team participated in these games under a specially designed sporting flag. The flag consisted of a white field charged with a grey diamond, which represented the country's mineral wealth, three cascading bands of blue, orange, and green, which represented the sea, the land, and agriculture respectively, and the Olympic rings. Rand Show
The Rand Show, previously known as the Rand Easter Show, is an annual show held in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is the largest consumer exhibition in Southern Africa. It has been an important event in the city for many years, attracting in excess of 400,000 visitors in 2007. It was also called the ''Grand Rand Show'', when it was held a few weeks outside of Easter in the late 1980s . There were no shows in 2020-21 due to COVID-19 restrictions on major events. The next event is scheduled for 6 to 10 April 2023. Besides the Great Boer War, other cancellations occurred in 1915-18 & 1940-45. Kathryn Hallowell "Kathy" Kusner (born March 21, 1940) is an American equestrian and Olympic medalist in show jumping. She was one of the first woman who rode for the United States Equestrian Team (USET), the first licensed female jockey, and the first American women to win an Olympic medal in equestrian competition. Early life Kathryn "Kathy" Kusner was born in Gainesville, Florida, on March 21, 1940. Her mother was a teacher; her father was a mathematics professor at U. Florida and later a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force. She grew up with a natural affinity for horses, searching for them in fields throughout her childhood days. When she first saw a horse show, she immediately knew that she wanted to ride horses for the rest of her life. Paul Schockemöhle
Paul Schockemöhle (born 22 March 1945) is a German former showjumper. He was a successful international show jumping equestrian in the 1970s and 1980s at individual and team events in Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships. He was three times European Champion on his best horse Deister. He is the brother of Alwin Schockemöhle, another leading German rider. After competing as a rider Schockemöhle became both a breeder and trainer of sport horses. According to an interview in 2011, he estimated he owns 3,500 horses, including 35 show jumping and dressage stallions. In October 2010, it was announced that he had purchased Moorlands Totilas, a champion dressage stallion shown by Edward Gal, from Moorlands Stables.
