Golden East Crossing is a shopping mall in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, United States. Opened in 1986, the mall features Belk, Books-A-Million, Conn's, Dunham's Sports, J. C. Penney, and Ross Dress for Less. It is managed by Hendon Properties. History The original anchor stores of Golden East Crossing were J. C. Penney, Roses (store), Roses, and Belk. Sears would also open its store in fall 1987. The mall was developed by Cadillac Fairview. Brody's, the successor to Roses, was sold to Proffitt's in 1998. Best Buy was added in November 2004. The same year, a movie theater operated by Cinema Grill closed. The mall was owned by General Growth Properties for nine years, then sold to Cadillac Fairview, and again to current owners Hendon Properties in 2005. Proffitt's was closed in 2005. Part of the store became Bed Bath & Beyond Inc., Bed Bath & Beyond that year, while the rest became Ross Dress for Less a year later. Petco was added in 2008. Rocky Mount is a city in Nash and Edgecombe counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The city's population was 54,341 as of the 2020 census, making it the 20th-most populous city in North Carolina. The city is east of Raleigh, the state capital. History In the summer of 1996, Thomson Newspapers traded the ''Telegram'' to Cox Newspapers in exchange for six newspapers in Arizona. The deal was completed on December 17 of that year. Proffitt's was a department store chain based in Alcoa, Tennessee. The chain was founded in 1919 by David W. Proffitt and James Ellis. In 2006, the Proffitt's and McRae's stores were converted into Belk after Belk had acquired the two chains in July 2005 from Saks, Inc. At the time of their demise they operated 47 Proffitts & McRae's stores. History Beginnings Jeweler David W. Proffitt and James Ellis founded the Ellis-Proffitt Co. on Main Street in downtown Maryville, Tennessee, in 1919. The first store had seven departments: ladies ready-to-wear, ladies accessories, millinery, men's shoes, dry goods, and bargain basement.
