Golden Days (play)
''Golden Days'' is a 1919 play by Sidney Toler and Marion Short, originally titled ''The Golden Age''. It is a comedy in four-acts, each having a sub-title, with three settings and fourteen characters. The action of the play takes place during Spring and Summer of 1917, and Spring 1919. The story concerns the blossoming of a small-town Connecticut girl and her awakening to a true romance. At the time, the play was considered unusual since all but three characters were between 16 and 21 years of age. The play was produced by George C. Tyler and Abe Erlanger. Under its original name it was given a week's tryout in Atlantic City during July 1919, staged by Frederick Stanhope, with Helen Hayes as the female lead. It wasn't performed again until March 1920, after it had been retitled to ''Golden Days''. Again staged by Frederick Stanhope, it was presented in South Bend, Indiana and Chicago, starring Patricia Collinge. It went on hiatus from June 1920 until it premiered on Broadway duri ... Sidney Toler
Sidney Toler (born Hooper G. Toler Jr., April 28, 1874 – February 12, 1947) was an American actor, playwright, and theatre director. The second non-Asian actor to play the role of Charlie Chan on screen, he is best remembered for his portrayal of the Chinese-American detective in 22 films made between 1938 and 1946. Before becoming Chan, Toler played supporting roles in 50 motion pictures, and was a highly regarded comic actor on the Broadway stage. Early life and career Hooper G. Toler Jr., who was called Sidney Toler from childhood, was born April 28, 1874, in Warrensburg, Missouri. The Toler family moved to Anthony, Kansas in the 1880s, then to Wichita, Kansas. He showed an early interest in the theater, acting in an amateur production of '' Tom Sawyer'' at the age of seven. He left the University of Kansas and became a professional actor in 1892, playing the heavy in a performance of a melodrama called ''The Master Man'' in Kansas City.
