William Goebel
William Justus Goebel (January 4, 1856 – February 3, 1900) was an American Democratic politician who served as the 34th governor of Kentucky for four days, having been sworn in on his deathbed a day after being shot by an assassin. Goebel is the only sitting state governor in United States history to die by assassination. Goebel was born to Wilhelm and Augusta Goebel (), German immigrants from Hanover. He studied at the Hollingsworth Business College in the mid-1870s and became an apprentice at John W. Stevenson's law firm. While Goebel lacked the social qualities like public speaking that are common with politicians, various authors referred to him as an intellectual man. He served in the Kentucky Senate, campaigning for populist causes like railroad regulation, which won him many allies and supporters. Justus Goebel
Justus Goebel, Sr. (July 21, 1858 – March 11, 1919) of Covington, Kentucky, was a Kentucky delegate to the 1912 Democratic National Convention and a tax-reform advocate. He was president of Lowry & Goebel. Biography He was born on July 21, 1858, in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, to Wilhelm Goebel and Augusta Groenkle. He had brothers William J. Goebel and Arthur Goebel and sister Minnie Goebel Braunecker. He married Elizabeth Reynolds and they had three children, Lieutenant Justus Goebel II (1892–1957); Captain William Arthur Goebel (born 1887), who both served in the American Expeditionary Forces; and Lilie Goebel Heusch, of Columbus, Ohio. Career Goebel was a co-owner of the Lowry & Goebel carpet company. A tax attorney, he was an advocate of tax reform in Kentucky and advocated for reevaluation of corporate assets. Timothy Richard Goebel (born September 10, 1980) is an American former competitive figure skater. He is the 2002 Olympic bronze medalist. He was the first person to land a quadruple salchow jump in competition and the first person to land three quadruple jumps in one program. Adam Joseph Goebel III (born September 2, 1980) is an American author, whose work centers around the peculiarities of culture in Middle America. He was raised in Henderson, Kentucky, a small town on the Ohio River across from Evansville, Indiana. His parents, Adam Goebel of Louisville, and Nancy Bingemer Goebel of Henderson, were both social workers and met in Frankfort, Kentucky. His older sister CeCe is also a social worker. Karl Florian Goebel (18 October 1972 — 10 September 2008) was a German astrophysicist attached to the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich. He had also been a member of DESY, a German-based research center that develops and runs several particle accelerators and detectors, most notably the ZEUS project. Goebel Brewing Company was a brewing company in Detroit, Michigan from 1873 to 1964, eventually acquired by Stroh Brewery Company. History In 1839, August Goebel Sr. was born in Münstermaifeld Rhenish, Prussia. During the Civil War, Goebel enlisted in the Union Army's 2nd Michigan Infantry Regiment and fought at Bull Run. In 1873, after the Civil War, August Goebel, Sr. and Theodore Gorenflo founded A. Goebel & Co., and by the 1880s, Goebel was Detroit's third largest brewery. The beer was locally popular in Detroit from the company's inception, but grew in popularity and was eventually available in many states for a brief period in the 1940s, with an ad campaign in Life magazine that featured restaurant ads from many famous eateries around the country using Goebel beer as an ingredient. Karl Immanuel Eberhard Ritter von Goebel FRS FRSE (8 March 1855, Billigheim, Baden Germany, Baden – 9 October 1932, Munich) was a German botanist. His main fields of study were comparative functional anatomy, morphology (biology), morphology, and the developmental physiology of plants under the influence of both phylogenetic and extrinsic factors. Life Starting in 1873, Goebel studied theology and philosophy, as well as botany with Wilhelm Hofmeister, at the University of Tuebingen. Reinhard Goebel (; born 31 July 1952 in Siegen, West Germany) is a German conductor and violinist specialising in early music on authentic instruments and professor for historical performance at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Goebel received his first violin lessons at the age of twelve. He studied the violin with , the leader of the Collegium Aureum, Saschko Gawriloff, an expert in difficult modern scores, and baroque violinists in The Hague and Eduard Melkus in Vienna. Peter Goebel was the third president of Elmhurst College. He served in this capacity from 1880 to 1887. He was succeeded by Daniel Irion in 1887.
