Goan Literature
Goan literature is the literature pertaining to the state of Goa in India. Goa has a population of around 1.4 million and an area of 3,700 sq. kilometres (1,430 sq. miles). For a small region, it has a significant amount of publication activity, possibly in part because its people write in a number of languages—perhaps as many as 13—and also because of the large expatriate and diaspora population of Goans settled across the globe. Among its most noted writers are Laxmanrao Sardessai (1904–1986) and R. V. Pandit (1917–1990), both of whom wrote poetry and prose in Marathi, Konkani, and Portuguese; Shenoi Goembab (1877–1946), whose Konkani writing helped to establish Konkani as a modern literary language; Ravindra Kelekar (1925–2010), who wrote some of the twentieth century's foremost Konkani literature; and Pundalik Naik (born 1952), whose 1977 novel ''Acchev'' was the first Konkani novel to be translated into English. Konkani Language
Konkani, (Devanagari: , Konkani in the Roman script, Romi: , Kannada script, Kannada: , Koleluttu: , Nastaliq: ; IAST: , ) formerly Concani or Concanese, is an Indo-Aryan languages, Indo-Aryan language spoken by the Konkani people, primarily in the Konkan region, along the western coast of India. Joseph Furtado
Joseph Furtado (7 April 1872 – 1 January 1947) was Portuguese poet and novelist who wrote in the English language. Marathi Literature
Marathi literature is the body of literature of Marathi, an Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly in the Indian state of Maharashtra and written in the Devanagari and Modi script. History Early history As a written language, Marathi is probably first attested in a 739 CE copper-plate inscription found in Satara. Several inscriptions dated to the second half of the 11th century feature Marathi, which is usually appended to Sanskrit or Kannada in these inscriptions. The earliest Marathi-only inscriptions are the ones issued during the Shilahara rule, including a c. 1012 CE stone inscription from Akshi taluka of Raigad district, and a 1060 or 1086 CE copper-plate inscription from Dive that records a land grant ( agrahara) to a Brahmin. Konkani Literature
Konkani literature is literature in the Konkani language, mostly produced in three scripts: Roman, Devanagari and Kannada. Konkani literature is eligible for the Sahitya Akademi Award. History While the earliest inscriptions in Konkani date from around the end of the first millennium, the first writer in the history of Konkani language known to us today is Shamaraja; who was also known as Krishnadas Shama as he was an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. Júlio Gonçalves
Luís Manuel Júlio Frederico Gonçalves (1846 – 1896), also known by his pen name J. Gonçalves, was a Portuguese writer. Referred to by his contemporaries as the "Alexandre Herculano of Goa", he had a foundational role in developing Portuguese-language writing in the Portuguese colony of Goa. Career A lawyer by training, Gonçalves served in public administration, most significantly as librarian of Publica Livraria, Academia Militar de Goa. Portugal's Regeneration saw the reintroduction of the press to Goa, along with expanded Portuguese education, and in its wake, Gonçalves founded and ran the monthly journal ''Ilustração Goana'' from 1864 to 1866.
