Goalparia Lokageet
Goalpariya Lokogeet is a folk music of Goalpara, sung to traditional lyrics. It is sung by goalpariya language speaking people. It was primarily Pratima Barua Pandey, who raised the profile of this hitherto unknown genre of music nationally in India. This genre of music is being kept alive by the Koch Rajbongshi and Deshi community in their music festivals. Currently, albums of Goalpariya songs are released commercially; and Goalpariya musical motifs and instruments are increasingly used in popular music in India. Some noted singers are Bina Das Borthakur, Mini Bhattacharya, Nazmul Hoque, Allauddin Sarkar, Hamida Sarkar, Abdul Jabber, Rahima Begum Kalita, Ayaan Anisur Etc. Goalpara Region
Goalpara region, largely congruous to the historical undivided Goalpara district, is a region that is associated with the people and culture of Goalpara. It is bounded on the north by Bhutan, on the east by the Kamrup region, in the south by Meghalaya and in the west by Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and Rangpur in Bangladesh. The natural landmarks are: Sankosh and Brahmaputra rivers on the west, the Manas River on the east in the north bank, and a corresponding region in the south bank; the Garo Hills in the south and Bhutan Hills in the north. History In ancient times, it was a part of a division of the Kamarupa kingdom. Goalpariya Language
Goalpariya is a group of Indo-Aryan languages, Indo-Aryan dialects spoken in the Goalpara region of Assam, India. Along with Kamrupi dialect, Kamrupi, they form the western group of Assamese language, Assamese dialects. The North Bengali dialect is situated to its west, amidst a number of Tibeto-Burman languages, Tibeto-Burman speech communities. The basic characteristic of the Goalpariya is that it is a composite one into which words of different concerns and regions have been amalgamated. Deshi people speak this language and there are around 20 lakhs people. History The Magadhi Prakrit, Eastern Magadhi Prakrit gave rise to four historical dialects—Radhi, Varendri, Kamarupi and Vanga. Pratima Barua Pandey
Pratima Barua Pandey (3 October 1934 – 27 December 2002) was an Indian Folk music, folk singer from the royal family of Gauripur, India, Gauripur in Western Assam's Dhubri district. Barua Pandey, a national awardee, best known for her Goalpariya Lokgeet, Goalpariya (Koch Rajbongshi / Kamatapuri/ Deshi) songs ''Hastir Kanya'' and ''Mur Mahut Bandhure'', was the daughter of Prakritish Chandra Barua (Lalji) and niece of filmmaker Pramathesh Barua of ''Devdas'' fame. Early life Barua Pandey was born on 3 October 1934, in Calcutta. She pursued her early education in the city's Gokhale Memorial School, after which she came to Assam to study at the Girls’ High School, Gauripur, India, Gauripur, home of the Kamata Kingdom, royal family. Koch Rajbongshi
The Rajbanshi, also Rajbongshi and Koch-Rajbongshi, are peoples from Western Assam, North Bengal, eastern Bihar, Terai region of eastern Nepal, Rangpur division of North Bangladesh and Bhutan who have in the past sought an association with the Koch dynasty. Koch-Rajbanshi people speak Kamatapuri, an Indo-Aryan language, likely due to language shift, and in the past they might have spoken Tibeto-Burman languages. The community is categorised as OBC in Assam and Bihar, and SC in West Bengal. In Nepal they are considered part of the Plains Janjati. In Bangladesh the community is classified as Plains ethnic group under 'Barman'. They are the largest Scheduled Caste community of West Bengal. Deshi People
Deshi ( Bengali-Assamese: দেশী) or Uzani ( Bengali-Assamese: উজানী) people are an indigenous Muslim community residing mostly in Assam and other parts of eastern India. The Deshi Muslim people can be found in Meghalaya, North Bengal, eastern Bihar, Rangpur and Bogura of Bangladesh. In West Bengal and Bihar they are known as Nashya Shaikh. Deshis are Muslim converts from Koch, Mech or other indigenous communities. In July, 2022, the Government of Assam gave them recognition as an "Indigenous Assamese Muslims" community vide an Order. Bhawaiya
Bhawaiya is a musical form or a popular folk music that originated in Northern Bengal, especially the Rangpur Division in Bangladesh, Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, India, and the undivided Goalpara district of Assam, India. It has recurrent themes of the "working class", '' mahouts'', ''mahishals'' (buffalo herders), and ''gariyals'' (cart drivers). Lyrics express pangs of separation and loneliness of their womenfolk, with elongated tones accentuating pain, longing and "deep emotion".
