Bhawaiya
Bhawaiya is a musical form or a popular folk music that originated in Northern Bengal, especially the Rangpur Division in Bangladesh, Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, India, and the Undivided Goalpara district of Assam, India. It has recurrent themes of the "working class", ''mahouts'', ''mahishals'' (buffalo herders), and ''gariyals'' (cart drivers). Lyrics express pangs of separation and loneliness of their womenfolk, with elongated tones accentuating pain, longing and "deep emotion". Bhawaiya is generally believed to have originated in the 16th century under Biswa Singha, and has evolved into stage performances since the 1950s. The lyrics of Bhawaiya songs are non-denominational. Abbasuddin Ahmed
Abbasuddin Ahmed (27 October 1901 – 30 December 1959) was a Bengali folk song composer and singer born in the Bengal province of British India. He was known for Bhawaiya folk song which is a style commonly found in Rangpur, Undivided Goalpara district and Cooch Behar Early life Ahmed was born in the Tufanganj subdivision of Cooch Behar district (now in India). His father, Zafar Ali Ahmed, was a lawyer at Tufanganj court. His was educated in schools and a college in North Bengal and was attracted to music by the cultural programs the offered. He was largely a self-taught composer and singer, though for a brief period he learned music from Ustad Jamiruddin Khan in Kolkata. Career Ahmed started his career by singing modern Bangla songs for the HMV studios, followed by modern songs of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh. Rathindranath Roy
Rathindranath Roy is a Bangladeshi musician. He was a performer in Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. Roy sang Bhawaiya songs from the Rangpur area. He is also a playback singer. He has won awards like BACHSHASH (Bangladesh Cine Journalists Society) Award in 1979 and 1981, and Ekushey Padak in 1994. Early life and education Roy passed SSC examination in 1960 and passed HSC from Dhaka College. He then enrolled into department of Bengali Literature in the University of Dhaka in 1968. Career Roy began his career as an artist in 1960. He became a regular singer on radio and television. He learnt music from his father Harolal Roy and PC Gomez. He performed in programs when he was a student of Dhaka University. In 2002 he founded the ''Bhawaiya Academy'' in Rangpur. Now the institution has branches in Gaibandha, Kurigram and Lalmonirhat. North Bengal ( bn, উত্তরবঙ্গ/উত্তর বাংলা) is a term used for the north-western part of Bangladesh and northern part of West Bengal. Kalpana Patowary
Kalpana Patowary is an Indian playback and folk singer from Assam. She sings in 30 languages and has many folk and popular songs to her credit, while Bhojpuri music has been her most dedicated foray. In his book, Cinema Bhojpuri, Avijit Ghosh lauds Patowary for her "remarkable contribution" to Bhojpuri film music. Angaraag Mahanta (born 24 November 1975), known by his stagename Papon, is an Indian playback singer, composer and record producer from Assam. Pratima Barua Pandey (3 October 1934 – 27 December 2002) was an Indian folk singer from the royal family of Gauripur in Western Assam's Dhubri district.
