Rendsburg-Eckernförde
Rendsburg-Eckernförde (; da, Rendsborg-Egernførde) is a district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is bounded by (from the east and clockwise) the city of Kiel, the district of Plön, the city of Neumünster, the districts of Segeberg, Steinburg, Dithmarschen and Schleswig-Flensburg, and the Baltic Sea. History In 1867 the Prussian administration established twenty districts in its province of Schleswig-Holstein, among them the districts of Rendsburg and Eckernförde. The present district was established in 1970 by merging the former districts. Geography The district is situated at the coast of the Baltic Sea, roughly between the cities of Schleswig and Kiel. A large portion of the Kiel Canal passes through Rendsburg-Eckernförde. It is one of the largest districts in the whole of Germany. Nortorf
Nortorf is a town in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is approximately 13 km northwest of Neumünster, and 25 km southwest of Kiel. Geography The location of Nortorf is south of the municipality of Ellerdorf, but north of Gnutz, and east of Bargstedt. History Nortorf acquired the status of a city on July 17, 1909. Previously, in summer 1899, the first town hall had been opened in Nortorf. As a consequence of World War II, Nortorf experienced a significant influx of refugees, displaced persons and evacuees, raising its population from 3359 (May 1939) to 6047 (October 1946). Aukrug is a municipality in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated approximately 13 km west of Neumünster, and 35 km southwest of Kiel. Geography Aukrug is the seat of the ''Amt'' (collective municipality) of Aukrug. Aukrug is south of the municipality of Mörel or Gnutz, east of Hohenwestedt and west of Wasbek and Ehndorf. History Innien, the oldest part of the municipality, appears in a surviving record from as far back as 1128. The name Aukrug comes from ‘in de Aukrögen’, using the Plattdeutsch (''low German'') of the region, and means something along the lines of ‘in the folds of the flood plain’.
