Gnarwarre
Gnarwarre is a locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. In the 1800s, the locality was alternately known as Shankhill. In the 2016 census, Gnarwarre had a population of 267 people. History The area was first settled by squatters in the late 1830s. The Gnarwarre Parish was first advertised for sale in 1839, with the parish, consisting of 22 lots of 640 acres or bigger, put up for sale on 10 June 1840. The sale was dramatically less successful than the February sale of blocks in the Barrabool Parish, with only four blocks being sold; virtually all of the remainder would be eventually sold in the 1850s. The Gnarwarre Parish did not see the same significant subdivision that occurred in the nearby Modewarre and Duneed parishes, which Wynd attributes to the land being seen as more suitable for grazing. Buckley, Victoria
Buckley is a locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. It was formerly known as Laketown. In the 2021 census, Buckley had a population of 227. Laketown A hotel called the Lady of the Lake opened in 1854 on Barrabool Road, at what is now Buckley, and the area began to be known as Laketown. The hotel reportedly flourished, being on the road to Colac, and became a social centre for the area. The hotel was a coach stop on the route to Colac, and the Duke of Edinburgh reportedly stopped there in 1870 while his party's horses were being rested. A post office opened at Laketown on 15 March 1872, and a store was added at around the same period. A school was opened in 1878, close to the hotel, initially known as Mount Moriac State School (No. 2063), but renamed Laketown in 1883. Barrabool, Victoria
Barrabool is a locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. In the 2016 census, Barrabool had a population of 235 people. History The area was first settled by squatters in the late 1830s. The lands of the Barrabool Parish were first advertised for sale in 1839, with the parish, consisting of 25 blocks of varying size, sold on 5 February 1840. Wynd writes that there was "plenty of competition for the rich lands of the Barrabool Hills", and that the sale was much more successful than subsequent 1840s attempts at selling the land in the nearby Gnarwarre and Modewarre parishes. The 1850s saw the development of the Berramongo Estate and the Suisse Vineyard at Barrabool, both of which survive today, and the land of the broader Barrabool Hills region was seen as having a "reputation for fertility" as a farming district. Wheat was a popular and successful crop initially, but the land began to decline in the 1860s, and Geelong Advertiser wrote in 1868 that "the land on the ... Stonehaven, Victoria
Stonehaven is a locality about 10 km west of Geelong, Victoria, on the Hamilton Highway. It consists of a number of scattered farmhouses, the former primary school building (now a private residence), a community hall (now derelict) and a Country Fire Authority (CFA) fire station. The fire station is sometimes used as a polling booth for state and federal elections. The Ceres Bridge Estate winery has its vineyard in Stonehaven, producing chardonnay and pinot noir. The community started agitating for a post office as early as 1883, when over 30 people signed a petition to the government. The Stonehaven Post Office opened in 1927 and was closed in 1958. The school was No. 2199. A contract for £320 15s 6d to build a wooden school building was given to H. Moran in April 1879. From 1879 to 1926 the school was known as the Lower Leigh State School. The Barwon River is a perennial river of the Corangamite catchment, located in The Otways and the Bellarine Peninsula regions of the Australian state of Victoria. Inverleigh is a town in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia located west from the City of Geelong, Victoria, Geelong and from the state capital, Melbourne. Mount Moriac, Victoria
Mount Moriac is a locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. It is named after the 270-metre-high extinct volcano which is a prominent feature of the area. The name is believed to derive from the local Aboriginal word for hill. In the 2016 census, Mount Moriac had a population of 240 people. A farming community developed at Mount Moriac as early as the 1840s, with a hotel opening in 1844. A Catholic school was opened by 1853, and a Catholic church (St Patrick's) built in 1863. It became the administrative centre of the district, with a police station, court, and the offices of the Barrabool Hills Road Board. By 1865, it also had a flour mill, several shops, the offices for the Shire of Barrabool, a hotel, and Presbyterian and Bible Christian churches. Mount Moriac State School opened in 1875. Surf Coast Shire
The Surf Coast Shire is a local government area in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia, located in the south-western part of the state. It covers an area of . It had a population of 32,251 in June 2018. It includes the towns of Aireys Inlet, Anglesea, Lorne, Moriac, Torquay and Winchelsea. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Winchelsea, Shire of Barrabool and part of the former City of South Barwon, which was, at that point, part of the City of Greater Geelong. The Shire is governed and administered by the Surf Coast Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Torquay.
