Glottiphyllum
''Glottiphyllum'' is a genus of about 57 species of succulent subtropical plants of the family Aizoaceae. It is closely related to the ''Gibbaeum'' and ''Faucaria'' genera. The name comes from ancient Greek γλωττίς ''glottis'' "tongue" and φύλλον ''phyllon'' "leaf". The species are native to South Africa, specifically to Cape Province and the Karoo desert. They grow in rocks and soils incorporating slate, sandstone and quartz. Rainfall in their native areas is between , most of which falls in March and November. Description ''Glottiphyllum'' plants have thick, soft leaves arranged in pairs that are low to the ground and often graze the soil surface. They also have rhizomes. They sport yellow flowers with narrow petals in the autumn and winter. The flowers are sometimes fragrant and around 5 cm in diameter. The species readily interbreed, making hybridization easy. Glottiphyllum Longum
''Glottiphyllum longum'' is a species of succulent plant in the family Aizoaceae, native to the Western Cape and Eastern Cape Provinces, South Africa. It is the most widespread ''Glottiphyllum'' species, and the most common one in cultivation. Description It can be distinguished from its relatives by the way that its flat, green, fleshy, tongue-shaped leaves are all born in two opposite rows (distichous), lying flat and mostly prostrate along the ground. The long leaves are distinctively strap-shaped, with rounded margins. Sometimes they are also mildly curved or upturned at the tips, but not hooked. The bladder cells at the leaf margins are oriented horizontally and not elongated. The fruits are born on long stalks. The seed capsules have 9 or more locules and persist on the stem for many years. The seeds are very small and smoothed on the sides. Distinction from ''Glottiphyllum depressum'' This species is sometimes confused with the similarly widespread '' Glottiphyllum ... Glottiphyllum Depressum
''Glottiphyllum depressum'' is a common species of succulent plant, of the family Aizoaceae, native to South Africa. It is probably the most widespread species of ''Glottiphyllum'', after ''Glottiphyllum longum'', and one of the most commonly found in cultivation. Though not as common as ''G.longum'', it is far more variable in its form. Description It can be distinguished from its relatives by its leaves, many of which are apically hooked. The clear appearance of a hook at the leaf tip is due to the impression of the opposite leaf against it when the leaf-pair was first emerging. The walls of the leaves' bladder cells are also noticeably undulate. The flowers and fruits do not have long stalks, and are therefore held close against the plant. The seed capsule has a very soft, round, spongy base, and thick valves raised up in a high (>3 mm) rounded dome shape at the top. The capsule's surrounding rim is low and depressed. The stalks of the capsule disintegrate rapidly, a ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Glottiphyllum Cruciatum
''Glottiphyllum cruciatum'' is a rare species of succulent plant, of the family Aizoaceae. It is indigenous to arid areas near Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape, South Africa. The plant has many synonyms including ''Glottiphyllum angustum''. Description This species has upturned, fleshy leaves that are broadened at the base, and born in pairs. The two leaves in a leaf-pair are a very similar size, unlike many other species of ''Glottiphyllum''. The leaf-pairs grow in a decussate arrangement (each leaf-pair at right angles to the previous one, rather than all in the same two distichous rows). The stems spread horizontally along the ground and the plant eventually can form large mats. The seed capsules have very high tops, and their stalks disintegrate quickly after the seeds have been released. This species most resembles its close relative, ''Glottiphyllum surrectum'', which is found further to the west, in the western Little Karoo.Heidrun E.K. Hartmann, Horst Gölling: ''A mo ... Glottiphyllum Linguiforme
''Glottiphyllum linguiforme'' is a widespread species of succulent plant, of the family Aizoaceae, native to South Africa. It is the type species of the genus ''Glottiphyllum''. Description This plant's species name means "tongue-shaped" in Latin, and refers to the appearance of the short, fleshy leaves. Its leaves are compact, smooth and oval, without any strong markings or apical hunches. The leaf surface has a pale waxy covering that can easily be rubbed off, and the lower part of the leaf is flat. It resembles ''Glottiphyllum carnosum'', which looks similar but has thicker leaves with hunched tips, and tends of offset and branch far more. Distribution and habitat It is indigenous to the central part of the arid Little Karoo near the town of Oudtshoorn, Western Cape Province, South Africa. Here it co-occurs with the rare ''Glottiphyllum cruciatum'' and the widespread ''Glottiphyllum depressum ''Glottiphyllum depressum'' is a common species of succulent plant, of the fa ... Glottiphyllum Suave
''Glottiphyllum suave'' is a species of succulent plant, in the family Aizoaceae. It is indigenous to arid areas of the western Little Karoo, in the Western Cape, South Africa. Description Each growth point bears a small number of compact, fleshy leaves, in two parallel, opposite rows (distichous leaf arrangement). The leaves of this species are thick, oval or rounded-elliptical, and ending in a slightly hunched "chin". The leaves also have clear margins and a pale waxy covering that can easily be rubbed off. This layer of white wax gives the leaves a slightly blue-grey hue. It is likely an adaptation to this plant's habitat preference for exposed positions in full sunlight.Heidrun E.K. Hartmann, Horst Gölling: ''A monograph on the genus ''Glottiphyllum'' (Mesembryanthema, Aizoaceae)''. ''Bradleya'' 11, 1993. The seed capsule disintegrates and falls from the plant soon after it has released its seeds. The seeds have long, equally-sized papillae. Distribution ''Glottiphyllum ... ''Glottiphyllum regium'' is a rare species of succulent plant, in the family Aizoaceae. It is known locally as "koeispene" ("cow-nipples" in the Afrikaans language). It is restricted to a small arid area near Calitzdorp in the Western Cape, South Africa. Description This is the largest species of its genus, with leaves over in length.
