Glossop North End Association Football Club is a Association football, football club in Glossop, Derbyshire, England, which competes in the . The club was founded in February 1886. Between 1899 and 1992 the club was officially known as Glossop. Their current home ground, since 1955, is at Surrey Street in Glossop; the club's colours are blue and they are nicknamed the Hillmen or the Peakites. Four years after their formation the club joined the North Cheshire League for three seasons and were champions in 1893–94. They then played two seasons each in The Combination and the Midland Football League (1889), Midland League. Between 1898 and 1915 the club were members of the English Football League, Football League. Glossop
Glossop is a market town in the borough of High Peak (borough), High Peak, Derbyshire, England, east of Manchester, north-west of Sheffield and north of Matlock, Derbyshire, Matlock. Near Derbyshire's borders with Cheshire, Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, between above sea level, it is bounded by the Peak District National Park to the south, east and north. In 2021, it had a population of 17,825. Historically, the name ''Glossop'' refers to the small hamlet that gave its name to an ancient parish recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and then the manorialism, manor given by William I of England to William Peverel. Cheshire County League
The Cheshire County League was a football league founded in the north west of England in 1919, drawing its teams largely from Cheshire, surrounding English counties and North Wales. Initially the league was dominated by the reserve teams of Football League clubs, but as the Central League became established for these teams, the non-league clubs won every title after 1938. The outbreak of World War II in 1939 led to the league being split into Eastern and Western sections, with the winners of each playing for the overall championship in 1939–40, with the league then closing down for the duration of the combat until restarting in 1945. In 1968 the league lost several clubs to the newly formed Northern Premier League. Despite this the league expanded in 1978 by adding a Division Two, but in 1982 the league ceased to exist after it merged with the Lancashire Combination to form the North West Counties Football League. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was the top division of the Football League in England from 1888 until the end of the 1991–92 season, when its teams broke away to form the Premier League. From 1992 to 2004, the name First Division was given to what had previously been called the Second Division. After the 2003–04 season, the division was renamed the Football League Championship (now EFL Championship, with the division below it called EFL League One). The Midland Football League was a semi-professional football league in England. It acted as a feeder league to the Football League for many years before merging with the Yorkshire Football League, Yorkshire League in 1982 to form the Northern Counties East League. History Founded in 1889, only one year after the Football League, the Midland League was the second league for professional clubs to be formed. Eleven clubs participated in the first season, 1889–90, four of whom (including the first champions, Lincoln City F.C., Lincoln City) would go on to achieve Football League status. The Combination
The Combination was a league during the early days of English football. It had two incarnations; the first ran only for the 1888–89 season for teams across Northern England and the Midlands, and was disbanded before completion. The second was created for the 1890–91 season, but persisted until it was defunct in 1911. The league comprised teams primarily from North West England and later Wales. The league should not be confused with the other former Football Combination, a competition for reserve teams from the South of England, or with the Lancashire Combination, another minor league running around the same time. North Road (Glossop)
North Road is a cricket and former football ground in Glossop in England. It was the home ground of Glossop North End during their time in the Football League, and was also used by Derbyshire CCC between 1899 and 1910. History The ground was originally used for cricket, but also became home to Glossop North End football club in 1898 when the club were elected to the Second Division of the Football League. The football ground was located in the south-east corner of the site, with a seated stand was constructed on the northern side of the pitch and embankments built on the south and eastern sides. During the football season a temporary wooden seated stand was erected behind the western goal, but removed for the cricket season. The first Football League match played at North Road was on 3 September 1898, with Glossop defeating Blackburn Rovers 4–1 in front of 4,000 spectators.
