Gloria Shillingford
Gloria Marilyn Shillingford is a Dominican educator and a politician in the Labour Party. She has served in the House of Assembly of Dominica since 2005. Shillingford graduated from Teikyo-Westmar University with a Bachelor of Arts.. She began working as a teacher in 1979, and eventually became principal of St. Andrews High School. She remained in education until she entered electoral politics. She ran unsuccessfully for the Wesley seat in the House of Assembly in the 2005 general election. She was subsequently appointed as a Senator that year. Shillingford again contested the Wesley constituency in the 2009 general election. She won the seat on 18 December 2009, with 809 votes against 734 received by Ezekiel Bazil of the UWP (52.4% to 47.6%). The Dominica Labour Party is a centre-left social-democratic political party in Dominica. History Founded in 1955 by Phyllis Shand Allfrey and Emmanuel Christopher Loblack, the Dominica Labour Party is the oldest political party in Dominica. House Of Assembly Of Dominica
The House of Assembly is the legislature of Dominica. It is established by Chapter III of the Constitution of Dominica, and together with the President of Dominica constitutes Dominica's Parliament. The House is unicameral, and consists of twenty-one Representatives, nine senators, and the Attorney General as an '' ex officio'' member. The Speaker of the House becomes the thirty-second member if chosen from outside the membership of the House. Representatives are directly elected in single-member constituencies using the simple-majority (or first-past-the-post) system for a term of five years. Teikyo-Westmar University
Westmar University was a private four-year liberal arts college in Le Mars, Iowa, United States. It permanently closed on November 21, 1997. Westmar University was founded in 1887 as the Northwestern Normal School and Business College by Jacob Wernli, the Plymouth County Superintendent of Schools. Wernli severed his association with the school in 1891. In 1892 it was taken over by the Le Mars Normal Association, an organization of local businessmen who saw value in having a college in the town, and renamed as Le Mars Normal School. It emphasized the training of teachers for public schools. In 1900, ownership of the college was transferred to the United Evangelical Church, renaming it Western Union College. Wesley, Dominica
Wesley () is a village in north-eastern Dominica, situated between the old estates of Eden and Londonderry. Like many other villages along the east coast Wesley developed after Emancipation on hilly land along the boundary between the two estates as labourers sought to establish independent holdings for themselves away from the plantations where they had formerly lived and worked. In the mid 19th century, Charles Leatham, owner of Eden, sold several small lots in this area. His estates had been centres for early evangelization by Wesleyan missionaries and by as early as 1837 religious and night school gatherings were being held in a large estate building on Londonderry estate. 2005 Dominican General Election
General elections were held in Dominica on 5 May 2005. The result was a victory for the ruling Dominica Labour Party, which won 12 of the 21 seats in the House of Assembly. The opposition United Workers' Party unsuccessfully made legal challenges to several of the constituency results. Background In the previous 2000 elections the ruling United Workers' Party won one fewer seats than the Dominica Labour Party, despite receiving more votes. As a result, the Dominica Labour Party with 10 seats was able to form a coalition government with the Dominica Freedom Party, which had won two seats. Ezekiel Bazil (born 16 November 1965). is a Dominican politician who has served in the House of Assembly of Dominica since 2010. He is the current president of the United Workers' Party. Bazil earned numerous certifications in the insurance industry and worked in Barbados and Antigua. He then moved back to Dominica, where he again worked in insurance and also as a managing director of a local company. Bazil's first venture into politics was to contest the Wesley constituency on the UWP ticket in the 2009 general election.
