Gloria Gómez-Sánchez
Gloria Gómez-Sánchez (1921–2007), born Gloria Benvenuto Reffray de Gómez-Sánchez, was a Peruvian artist who formed part of the experimental scene in Lima during the late 1960s. Her practice moved through diverse trends and genres, including Pop art, informalism, happenings, and conceptual art. Career Initially self-taught, she later continued her education though private classes in the studios of artists Ricardo Grau, Cristina Gálvez and Germán Suárez Vértiz, which she attended for a period of five years. Following this period, Gómez-Sánchez quickly began to experiment with non-traditional materials, such as sand and sawdust, to achieve innovative textures on the surfaces of her paintings. Matter painting () also known as Matterism refers to a style of painting that emphasizes the material qualities of paint through heavy impasto. The style marked a return to impulses characteristic of abstract expressionism. Matterism first emerged in Paris in the 1940s in the work of Jean Dubuffet and Jean Fautrier. Whitechapel Gallery
The Whitechapel Gallery is a public art gallery in Whitechapel on the north side of Whitechapel High Street, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The original building, designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, opened in 1901 as one of the first publicly funded galleries for temporary exhibitions in London. The building is a notable example of the British Modern Style. In 2009 the gallery approximately doubled in size by incorporating the adjacent former Passmore Edwards library building. It exhibits the work of contemporary artists and organizes retrospective exhibitions and other art shows.
