Gloria (ballet)
''Gloria'' is a ballet created by Kenneth MacMillan in 1980 for the Royal Ballet, London. The music is Francis Poulenc's ''Gloria'' for soprano, chorus and orchestra (1961). The first performance was at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 13 March 1980. The lead roles were danced by Wayne Eagling, Jennifer Penney, Julian Hosking and Wendy Ellis. The soprano soloist was Teresa Cahill; the conductor was Ashley Lawrence; designs (scenery and costumes) were by Andy Klunder,Percival, John. Kenneth MacMillan
Sir Kenneth MacMillan (11 December 192929 October 1992) was a British ballet dancer and choreographer who was artistic director of the Royal Ballet in London between 1970 and 1977, and its principal choreographer from 1977 until his death. Earlier he had served as director of ballet for the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He was also associate director of the American Ballet Theatre from 1984 to 1989, and artistic associate of the Houston Ballet from 1989 to 1992. From a family with no background of ballet or music, MacMillan was determined from an early age to become a dancer. The director of Royal Ballet, Sadler's Wells Ballet, Ninette de Valois, accepted him as a student and then a member of her company. In the late 1940s, MacMillan built a successful career as a dancer, but, plagued by stage fright, he abandoned it while still in his twenties. Wendy Ellis
Wendy Ellis Somes is a former principal ballerina with the Royal Ballet in London, and is now a worldwide producer of the Sir Frederick Ashton ballets ''Cinderella'' and '' Symphonic Variations''. Early life She was born Wendy Rose Ellis in Blackburn, and received her early training at the Carlotta School of Dance, later winning a British Ballet Organization scholarship. In 1963 she was selected to study at the Royal Ballet School, and moved to London with her parents to continue training. She started there in 1963 and joined the Royal Ballet in 1970. Genesia Rosato
Genesia Rosato (born 29 September 1957) is a retired British ballerina. She was a principal character artist with the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, where her career lasted four decades from 1976 to 2016. Early life Genesia Rosato was born in Surrey. Fiona Chadwick
Fiona Chadwick is a British ballerina and a former principal dancer with the Royal Ballet. She is now a ballet teacher. Fiona Chadwick was born in Morecambe, Lancashire. She began her training at the Sandham Fitchett school in Preston. Chadwick continued at the Royal Ballet School, and joined The Royal Ballet in 1978. She was promoted to Soloist in 1981 and Principal in 1984. Chadwick created the role of The Queen in Matthew Bourne’s production of ''Swan Lake'', playing the role in both the West End and in the film. Ashley Page
Ashley Page OBE (born August 1956) is a British former ballet dancer, choreographer and was artistic director of Scottish Ballet for ten years. Ashley Page was born in Rochester, Kent in August 1956. Page trained the Royal Ballet School, and joined the Royal Ballet in 1976. There, he worked closely with Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan, creating numerous roles in their new ballets. He also worked with visiting choreographers including Glen Tetley and, especially, Richard Alston, who was to become his choreographic mentor. He was promoted to principal dancer in 1984. Page was artistic director of Scottish Ballet for ten years, from 2002 to 2012. In August 2012, Christopher Hampson succeeded him as artistic director of Scottish Ballet. Ashley Macdonald Lawrence, (5 June 1934, Hamilton, New Zealand – 7 May 1990, Tokyo) was a New Zealand conductor mainly active in the UK and Germany, and particularly associated with ballet.Goodwin N. Julian Hosking
Julian Hosking (1953-1989) was a British ballet dancer and a former principal dancer with the Royal Ballet. Hosking was born in Cornwall of a Viennese mother and Cornish father. He entered White Lodge aged 11 and progressed to the Royal Ballet School.Biographical note in Royal Opera House programme booklet, 17 November 1984. Jennifer Penney
Jennifer Penney (born 1946) is a Canadian ballerina and a former principal dancer with the Royal Ballet. Jennifer Penney was born in 1946 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She studied there with Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally, and then at the Royal Ballet School from 1962–63. Penney joined the Royal Ballet in 1963 and became a principal in 1970. Wayne Eagling
Wayne Eagling (born 27 November 1950) is a Canadian ballet dancer, now retired. After more than twenty years as a popular member of The Royal Ballet in London, he became well known as an international choreographer and company director. Early life and training Wayne John Eagling was born in Montreal, Quebec, to Anglophone parents, Edward and Thelma Eagling. He spent much of his childhood and youth in California, where his family had moved. As a boy, he augmented his academic studies by attending classes at the Patricia Ramsey Studio of Dance Arts. There, he developed into a gifted student of classical ballet and, as he matured, was encouraged by his teachers to pursue a career as a professional dancer.
