Globe Cinema (Kolkata)
Globe Cinema was a single screen cinema hall and heritage building located in Lindsay Street (opposite New Market entrance), Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The theatre was previously known as Old Opera House. The wooden opera house was established in 1827 and sold to E M Cohen in 1906. Cohen converted it into a movie theatre and named it Globe Cinema. The theatre was owned by Sidhwa family and Jal Tata. Dhansri Abasan Pvt Ltd partnered with Goldstar Enclave Pvt Ltd and acquired the Globe Theatre Pvt Ltd from them. The gigantic single-screen theatre has made way for a mini-mall with a twin-theatre multiplex, over 100 retail stores and a food court. Esplanade, Kolkata
Esplanade is a neighbourhood of Central Kolkata, in Kolkata district in the Indian state of West Bengal. This is not a conventional esplanade in the sense that the place is not exactly situated alongside a waterbody. However, the Ganga river ( Ganges), also known as Hooghly river, flows nearby. History The Esplanade was the name given to the northern portion of jungle, which later formed the Maidan. In olden days, it stretched from Dharmatala (now Lenin Sarani) to Chandpal Ghat on the Hooghly river. In the days of Warren Hastings, it formed a favourite promenade for 'elegant walking parties'. The first pictures of the area is at the end of eighteenth century by Daniell and William Baillie. The old Government House and the Council House were conspicuous objects in each drawing.
