Global Campaign On Military Spending
The Global Campaign on Military Spending (GCOMS) is a global campaign that was created in December 2014 by the International Peace Bureau (IPB) to tackle the worldwide issue of excessive military spending. The aim of the campaign is to pressure the world's governments to invest money in the sectors of health, education, employment and climate change rather than military. It also calls for an annual, minimum reallocation of 10% from the military budgets of all states. Finally, it advocates the reduction of arms production and international weapons trade. Disarmament is the act of reducing, limiting, or abolishing weapons. Disarmament generally refers to a country's military or specific type of weaponry. A military budget (or military expenditure), also known as a defense budget, is the amount of financial resources dedicated by a state to raising and maintaining an armed forces or other methods essential for defense purposes. Financing militaries Military budgets often reflect how strongly a country perceives the likelihood of threats against it, or the amount of aggression it wishes to conjure. Joseph Gerson
Joseph Gerson is an American peace and disarmament activist. He is president of the Campaign for Peace, Disarmament and Common Security and vice-president of the International Peace Bureau. Since 1976 he has served the American Friends Service Committee as director of the Peace and Economic Security Program. Early life and education Gerson was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. He earned a bachelor of Science in Foreign Service at Georgetown University and received his Doctorate in Politics and International Security Studies from the Union Institute. Angelo Cardona
Angelo Cardona (born 5 January 1997) is a Colombian social entrepreneur, peace and human rights activist. He is representative of Latin America to the International Peace Bureau. Co-founder and President of the Ibero-American Alliance for Peace and ambassador of Colombia to the Youth Assembly at the United Nations. In 2021, he won The Diana Award. Reiner Braun
Reiner Braun (born 22 December 1952 in Braunschweig) is a German journalist, historian and peace activist. He is executive director of the International Peace Bureau (IPB). From 2013 to 2019 he served as President of the IPB. Activism Braun has been involved in the peace movement since 1982. Confronted with the growing danger of nuclear threats he started his activism against nuclear weapons from a young age. He work for the Krefeld Appeal against nuclear weapons. International Peace Bureau
The International Peace Bureau (IPB) (french: Bureau international de la paix), founded in 1891, is one of the world's oldest international peace federations. The organisation was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1910 for acting "as a link between the peace societies of the various countries". Global Day of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS) takes place every year in mid-April.
