Global Action Plan International
Global Action Plan International or GAP International is a network of NGOs that specialises in sustainable behaviour change and is best known for its projects revolving around ESD. GAP International's mission is to empower people to live and work increasingly sustainably, at school, at home and at work. There are programmes designed for households and communities, schools and youth, and workplaces. History Global Action Plan was first established in 1989 on the initiative of David Gershon (USA) and Bessie Schadee (Netherlands). Together they worked to produce the first draft EcoTeam workbooks in 1989. The ''Household EcoTeam Programme'' is an action programme designed to improve pro-environmental behavior in the household. GAP was quickly joined by other countries, with Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and UK being among the first. The programme has continued to develop to this day. They are typically nonprofit organization, nonprofit entities, and many of them are active in humanitarianism or the social sciences; they can also include club (organization), clubs and voluntary association, associations that provide services to their members and others. Surveys indicate that NGOs have a high degree of public trust, which can make them a useful proxy for the concerns of society and stakeholders. Sustainable development is an organizing principle for meeting human development goals while also sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services on which the economy and society depend. Marilyn Mehlmann
Marilyn Mehlmann (born 1939 in London) is a Swedish environmentalist and educator. Early life and education Born in England, Mehlmann went to a French school and worked in Norway and Denmark before settling in Sweden. Career At the start of her career, Mehlmann was involved with product development at IBM. After a period as Senior Associate at the consultancy firm Projektstyrning AB she founded her own management consultancy, while also acting as director of the Swedish Institute for Social Inventions. In 1995, Mehlmann was appointed General Secretary of Global Action Plan International, a network of NGOs that specialises in sustainable behaviour change. She has worked for several decades in around 30 countries in Europe, the United States, Asia, and Southern Africa to empower individuals and organizations to live and work more sustainably. The Rachel Carson Prize (''Rachel Carson-prisen'') is an international environmental award, established in Stavanger, Norway in 1991 to commemorate the achievements of environmentalist Rachel Carson and to award efforts in her spirit. The prize is awarded to a woman who has distinguished herself in outstanding work for the environment in Norway or internationally. Sustainably
Specific definitions of sustainability are difficult to agree on and have varied in the literature and over time. The concept of sustainability can be used to guide decisions at the global, national, and individual levels (e.g. sustainable living). Sustainability is commonly described as having three dimensions (also called pillars): environmental, economic, and social. Many publications state that the environmental dimension (also called " planetary integrity" or "ecological integrity") is the most important, and, in everyday usage, "sustainability" is often focused on countering major environmental problems, such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, loss of ecosystem services, land degradation, and air and water pollution.
