The ''Global'' class is a class of cruise ships constructed by the German shipbuilder MV Werften for Genting Hong Kong. With Genting's bankruptcy in 2022, the future of the ''Global'' class was in doubt. On November 16, 2022, Disney Cruise Line confirmed it acquired the unfinished ''Global Dream''. The second unfinished ship has been scrapped. History Genting Hong Kong ordered two ships of the class in May 2016 from its subsidiary Lloyd Werft Group for service in the Star Cruises fleet, with delivery of the first vessel planned for 2019. MV Werften
MV Werften was a Hong Kong–Germany, German shipbuilding company that operated three facilities in eastern Germany to construct cruise ships for parent company Genting Hong Kong. In January 2022, MV Werften filed for bankruptcy, and an administrator was appointed by the court to oversee the bankruptcy proceedings. The companies three yards were sold off. History The company was originated in Genting Hong Kong's purchase in April 2016 of three shipyards from Nordic Yards, located in Lloyd Werft Wismar, Wismar, Volkswerft Stralsund, Stralsund, and Marinearsenal Warnowwerft, Rostock-Warnemünde. The yards were initially combined with Lloyd Werft, previously purchased by Genting, to form the Lloyd Werft Group, but in July 2016 the three eastern ex-Nordic yards were organized into MV Werften, headquartered in Wismar and led by Jarmo Laakso. Meyer Wismar (former ''Volkseigener Betrieb, VEB Mathias-Thesen-Werft Wismar'', ''Aker MTW Werft'', ''Wadan Yards MTW'', ''Nordic Yards Wismar'') is a German shipbuilding company, headquartered in Wismar. Laying the keel or laying down is the formal recognition of the start of a shipbuilding, ship's construction. It is often marked with a ceremony attended by dignitaries from the shipbuilding company and the ultimate owners of the ship. Keel laying is one of the four specially celebrated events in a ship's life; the others are Ceremonial ship launching, launching, Ship commissioning, commissioning, and Ship decommissioning, decommissioning. Earlier, the event recognized as the keel laying was the initial placement of the central timber making up the backbone of a vessel, called the keel. As steel ships replaced wooden ones, the central timber gave way to a central steel beam.
