Gliophorus
''Gliophorus'' is a genus of agaric fungi in the family (biology), family Hygrophoraceae. ''Gliophorus'' species belong to a group known as waxcaps in English, sometimes also waxy caps in North America or waxgills in New Zealand. In Europe, ''Gliophorus'' species are typical of waxcap grasslands, a declining habitat due to changing agricultural practices. As a result, two species, ''Gliophorus europerplexus'' and ''Gliophorus reginae'', are of global conservation concern and are listed as "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Taxonomy The genus was described by Czech mycologist Josef Herink in 1958. It was formerly synonym (biology), synonymized with ''Hygrocybe'' by many authorities, but recent Molecular phylogenetics, molecular research, based on cladistic analysis of DNA sequences, indicates that ''Gliophorus'' is monophyletic and forms a natural group distinct from ''Hygrocybe'' sensu stricto. Description Species are distinguished from most other waxcaps by ...

Hygrocybe Psittacina
''Gliophorus psittacinus'', commonly known as the parrot toadstool or parrot waxcap, is a colourful member of the genus ''Gliophorus'', found across Northern Europe. It was formerly known as ''Hygrocybe psittacina'', but a molecular phylogenetics study found it to belong in the genus ''Gliophorus''. It had already been placed in ''Gliophorus'', but it had been considered a synonym of '' Hygrocybe''. Description The parrot toadstool is a small mushroom, with a convex to umbonate cap up to in diameter, which is green when young and later yellowish or even pinkish tinged. The stipe, measuring in length and 3–5 mm in width, is green to greenish yellow. The broad adnate gills are greenish with yellow edges and spore print white. The green colouring persists at the stem apex even in old specimens. The spores are white, elliptical, smooth and inamyloid. Its odour and taste are mild. There are no known chemical tests. It fruits late summer to autumn (September to Novembe ...

Gliophorus Reginae
''Gliophorus reginae'' is a species of agaric (gilled mushroom) in the family Hygrophoraceae. It has been given the recommended English name of jubilee waxcap. The species has a European distribution, occurring mainly in agriculturally unimproved grassland. Threats to its habitat have resulted in the species being assessed as globally "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Taxonomy The species was first described from England in 2013, as a result of molecular research, based on cladistic analysis of DNA sequences. It was formerly considered one of several colour variants of the widespread Parrot Waxcap '' Gliophorus psittacinus'', which it otherwise resembles. The Latin epithet ''reginae'' (meaning "of the queen") was given in honour of the 2012 diamond jubilee and coronation anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and also because of the royal purple cap colour of the basidiocarps. Description Basidiocarps are agaricoid, up to 70 mm (2.75 in) tall ...

Gliophorus Chromolimoneus
''Gliophorus chromolimoneus'' is a species of agaric fungus in the family Hygrophoraceae found in New Zealand and Australia. Description The cap is in diameter, hemispherical at first, flattening with age and becoming umbonate. It is glutinous to the touch and some shade of pale to chrome yellow. The margin is striated and the texture membranaceous. The gills are adnate to decurrent and the same colour as the cap at first, but fade with age, and have a gelatinous thread. The stipe is long, in diameter, cylindrical, hollow and glutinous throughout its length; the base is orange, but the rest of the stipe is the same colour as the cap. The spores are ellipsoid, smooth and inamyloid, and measure 7–9.5 x 4-6 µm. The basidia are 0-47 x 6-7 µm, and four-spored. Ecology ''Gliophorus chromolimoneus'' is a common saprotrophic species of fungus, deriving its nutrition from decaying organic matter. The fruiting bodies appear between December and June among the ...

''Gliophorus graminicolor'' is a species of agaric fungus in the family Hygrophoraceae. It is found in Australia and New Zealand. Gliophorus Europerplexus
''Gliophorus europerplexus'' is a species of agaric (gilled mushroom) in the family Hygrophoraceae. It has been given the recommended English name of butterscotch waxcap. The species has a European distribution, occurring mainly in agriculturally unimproved grassland. Threats to its habitat have resulted in the species being assessed as globally "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Taxonomy The species was first described from Wales in 2013, as a result of molecular research, based on cladistic analysis of DNA sequences. It was formerly considered to be conspecific with the North American species '' Gliophorus perplexus'', which it otherwise resembles. Description Basidiocarps are agaricoid, up to 60 mm (2.5 in) tall, the cap hemispherical to broadly umbonate becoming flat, up to 25 mm (1 in) across. The cap surface is smooth, highly viscid when damp, pink-brown to orange-brown. The lamellae (gills) are waxy, cap-coloured or pale ...
