Glenna Hansen
Glenna F. Hansen (born August 10, 1956) is an Inuvialuk Canadian politician. She served as the commissioner of the Northwest Territories from March 31, 2000, to April 29, 2005. Early life Born in Aklavik, Northwest Territories, Canada, Hansen joined David Storr and Sons Contracting Ltd., in 1991 as an executive assistant. As of 2004, she is general manager of David Storr and Sons Contracting Ltd., a position she rose to in 1996. Election attempts Hansen ran for a seat in the Northwest Territories Legislature in the electoral district of Inuvik Twin Lakes for the 1999 Northwest Territories general election The 1999 Northwest Territories general election was held on December 6, 1999. Aklavik, Northwest Territories
Aklavik (Inuvialuktun: ''Akłarvik'') (from the Inuvialuktun meaning '' barrenground grizzly place'') is a hamlet located in the Inuvik Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada. Until 1961, with a population over 1,500, the community served as the regional administrative centre for the territorial government. Because of repeated flooding in this area, the government developed Inuvik to the east. It was meant to entirely replace Aklavik, but many of the residents of the original community persevered and kept Aklavik going. Its 2018 population was 623. The hamlet's mayor is Andrew Charlie. History Aklavik began to develop in the early 1900s after the Hudson's Bay Company opened a trading post in 1912. The Roman Catholic Church later established a mission here in 1926. Located on the Peel Channel, the community became a transportation hub in the Mackenzie. It was in a good trapping area. 2011 Northwest Territories General Election
The 2011 Northwest Territories general election was held on October 3, 2011. Nineteen members were returned to the 17th Legislative Assembly from single member districts conducted under first-past-the-post voting system. The territory operates on a consensus government system with no political parties; the premier is subsequently chosen by and from the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Three incumbent MLAs faced no challengers and were acclaimed back into office in their districts. Five new MLAs were elected, although only one defeated an incumbent; all of the other four won in open seats where the incumbent MLA did not run for re-election.
