Glaucidium Ireneae
''Glaucidium ireneae'' is an extinct species of pygmy owl that lived in what is now Gauteng, South Africa during the Early Pleistocene epoch, about 2.5–1.38 million years ago. Discovery and naming In 2020, Italian ornithologist Marco Pavia published a study on fossilized bird remains found at the Kromdraai fossil site in Gauteng, South Africa, in which he reviewed over 800 specimens representing 25 different species from the site. Among these, Pavia noticed that some of the fossils kept in the Evolutionary Studies Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand represented a species of owl unknown to science. After comparisons with the bones of modern owls, he determined that this new species belonged in the genus '' Glaucidium'', and gave it the scientific name ''Glaucidium ireneae''. The Early Pleistocene is an unofficial epoch (geology), sub-epoch in the international geologic timescale in chronostratigraphy, representing the earliest division of the Pleistocene Epoch within the ongoing Quaternary Period. It is currently estimated to span the time between 2.580 ± 0.005 annum, Ma (million years ago) and 0.773 ± 0.005 Ma. The term Early Pleistocene applies to both the Gelasian, Gelasian Age and the Calabrian (stage), Calabrian Age. Pygmy owls are members of the genus ''Glaucidium''. They belong to the typical owl family, Strigidae. The genus consists of 29 species distributed worldwide. These are mostly small owls, and some of the species are called "owlets". The genus includes nocturnal, diurnal, and crepuscular species. Birds in this genus mainly hunt large insects and other small prey. Taxonomy The genus ''Glaucidium'' was introduced in 1826 by the German zoologist Friedrich Boie. A coracoid is a paired bone which is part of the shoulder assembly in all vertebrates except therian mammals (marsupials and placentals). In therian mammals (including humans), a coracoid process is present as part of the scapula, but this is not homologous with the coracoid bone of most other vertebrates. In other tetrapods, it joins the scapula to the front end of the sternum and has a notch on the dorsal surface which, along with a similar notch on the ventral surface of the scapula, forms the socket in which the proximal end of the humerus (upper arm bone) is located. Cooper's Cave is a series of fossil-bearing breccia filled cavities. The cave is located almost exactly between the well known South African hominid-bearing sites of Sterkfontein and Kromdraai and about northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa and has been declared a South African National Heritage Site. The pearl-spotted owlet (''Glaucidium perlatum'') is a small bird of prey found in sub-Saharan Africa. They belong to the Strigidae family, otherwise known as the typical owls or the true owls, which contains most species of owl. As part of the genus ''Glaucidium,'' or pygmy owls'','' they are commonly referred to as 'owlets' due to their diminutive size. Pearl-spotted owlets are brownish and heavily spotted white, with two distinct black false 'eyes' at the back of their head. They are often confused with an African barred owlet. Taung is a small town situated in the North West Province of South Africa. The name means ''place of the lion'' and was named after Tau, the King of the Barolong people.
