Glasgow United F.C.
Glasgow United Football Club are a Scottish football club based in Shettleston, in the East End of Glasgow. Nicknamed ''the Town'', they were formed in 1903 as Shettleston Juniors Football & Athletic Club and renamed prior to the 2021–22 season. The club continues to play at Greenfield Park and currently competes in the West of Scotland League. Shettleston reached the final of the 1958–59 Scottish Junior Cup, losing 2–1 to Irvine Meadow in front of a crowd of 65,211 fans at Hampden Park. Their fortunes have been mixed in recent years, flitting between the various divisions of the league they have been based in, although they managed to reach the semi-finals of the Scottish Junior Cup in 2000–01, and the quarter-finals of the same competition in 2001–02 and 2014–15. Tommy Coyne
Thomas Coyne (born 14 November 1962) is a former football player and manager. Coyne played for several clubs, mostly in Scotland, including Clydebank, Dundee United, Dundee, Celtic and Motherwell. He was the top goalscorer of the Scottish Premier Division three times, a feat he achieved with three clubs (Dundee, Celtic and Motherwell). Coyne played international football for the Republic of Ireland, qualifying due to his Irish ancestry. Towards the end of his playing career he was also the manager of Clydebank, a position he left after six months. Club career Coyne was raised in Govan as a supporter of Celtic and attracted the attention of their scouts in his teens, though no move materialised. John Wheatley, Baron Wheatley
John Thomas Wheatley, Baron Wheatley, (17 January 1908 – 28 July 1988) was a Scottish Labour politician and judge. Biography Wheatley was born on 17 January 1908 in Shettleston, Glasgow, the third and youngest child of Janet (1877–1951), a pupil teacher and daughter of Peter Murphy, a labourer from Belfast, and Patrick Wheatley (1875–1937), sometime miner and later publisher, who was born in County Waterford. He was educated at St. Aloysius' College, Glasgow, Mount St Mary's College near Sheffield, and the University of Glasgow. He was admitted as an advocate in 1932. He served in the Royal Artillery and the Judge Advocate Generals' Branch during World War II. As an advocate, he appeared before the Court of Session in his military uniform. Bobby Russell (footballer, Born 1957)
Robert Russell (born 11 February 1957) is a Scottish former professional footballer, who is best known for his time with Rangers. Club career Born in Glasgow, Russell joined Rangers from Shettleston Juniors in 1977 and made his first team debut against Aberdeen on 13 August that year, aged only 20. The game ended in a 3–1 defeat, however Rangers went on to win the treble that season and Russell cemented his place on the right side of the midfield. He made 370 appearances for the club and won a league championship, two Scottish Cups and four Scottish League Cups. He left Rangers and joined Motherwell in 1987 and was part of the side that won the 1990–91 Scottish Cup. Coaching career Russell returned to Rangers as part of the youth coaching set up. Bill Gorman
William Charles Gorman (13 July 1911 – December 1978) was an Irish footballer who played for, among others, Bury and Brentford. Gorman was a dual internationalist who also played for both Ireland teams – the FAI XI and the IFA XI. In September 1946 Gorman, along with Johnny Carey, actually played for both teams against England within three days of each other. The 11 international caps Gorman won while playing for Bury remain a club record. Club career Although born in County Sligo, Gorman was raised in Scotland and spoke with a Scottish accent. He began his footballing career with junior club Shettleston. An engineer by trade, he went completely bald by the time he was 19 and subsequently became known as ''Old Naked Brains''.
