Gladys Vergara
Gladys Elena Vergara Gavagnin (1928 – 5 July 2016) was a Uruguayan astronomer and professor, known for her calculations on eclipses, made during a time when computers were not capable of them. The asteroid 5659 Vergara is named in her honor. Career Vergara studied physical sciences and astronomy, at a time when both fields were inaccessible for women. She was part of the first generation of students of the Astronomy Department founded by Dr. Cernuschi in the University of the Republic's . In 1952, she was one of the founders of the Association of Astronomy Aficionados. She was secretary of the Uruguayan Antarctic Institute. On 18 July 1968, Chilean astronomers Carlos Torres and S. Cofré discovered, at the Cerro El Roble Astronomical Station in Chile, a new main belt asteroid that was provisionally designated 1968 OA1. Montevideo () is the capital and largest city of Uruguay. Unitron
Unitron is a US-based company and distributor of optical instruments including stereo microscopes and accessories, binoculars, and classic brass telescopes. The company was founded in 1952 by Lawrence A. Fine as the United Trading Company and located in Boston, MA. He registered the UNITRON trademark in the United States for first use in commerce in February, 1952. The company started out importing smaller ( 1.6" to 4" refractors) that were manufactured by Nihon Seiko of Japan. By 1961 Unitron expanded the product line to include 5" and 6" models that were suited for observatory use. A very small number of the 5" and 6" models were produced. Esmeralda Mallada
Esmeralda Herminia Mallada Invernizzi (born 10 January 1937) is a Uruguayan astronomer and professor who, for her contributions to that scientific discipline, has been honored with the designation of her name to an asteroid. Career Mallada was a student of cosmography with Professor Alberto Pochintesta. At the University of the Republic's , she was a colleague of Gladys Vergara, who helped her prepare for the cosmography professorship competition. She became a professor of cosmography and mathematics in secondary education at age 21. She also taught at the university's Faculty of Sciences, where she graduated with a licentiate in astronomy. She is currently retired. On 16 October 1952, at the invitation of Pochintesta, she was one of the founders of the Association of Amateur Astronomers (AAA) in Uruguay, and in 2015 was made its honorary president.
