GiveWay
GiveWay is a Scottish quartet that performs a mix of traditional and new songs. The members are sisters from outside Edinburgh: Fiona Johnson (fiddle, guitar, piano, whistle, and vocals), Kirsty Johnson (piano, accordion, and vocals), and twins Amy Johnson (drums and accordion) and Mairi Johnson (piano/keyboard, bass, and vocals). The four were all born within four years. They won a Danny Award from the Scottish music festival's Celtic Connections in 2001 and the Young Folk Award from BBC 2 Radio. Fiona and Kirsty have both attended The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). Their three full-length albums are "Full Steam Ahead" (2003), "Inspired" (2005), and "Lost In This Song" (2009). Phil Cunningham (folk Musician)
Philip Martin Cunningham, MBE (born 27 January 1960 in Edinburgh, Scotland) is a Scottish folk musician and composer. He is best known for playing the accordion with Silly Wizard, as well as in other bands and in duets with his brother, Johnny. When they played together, they would egg each other on to play faster and faster, and try, light-heartedly, to trip each other up. Phil has also collaborated with numerous other great Celtic musicians; one prominent example of this is his partnership with Aly Bain. The duo have (as of 2020) released nine albums, and between 1989 and 2019 they had a yearly spot at the New Year's Hogmanay Live broadcast on BBC Scotland. Mairi Campbell
Mairi Campbell (born 1965) is a Scottish Folk music, folk singer and musician. Campbell's songs and music range from the everyday to the universal, both in sound and subject matter. Campbell's awards include Scots Singer of the Year, Female Musician of the Year, Neil Gow Composition of the Year, and Tutor of the Year. Campbell and co-creator Kath Burlinson have created three solo multi-disciplinary theatre shows, ''Living Stone'' (premieres in August 2024), ''Auld Lang Syne'' (2018) and ''Pulse'' (2015), as part of a trilogy. Campbell's theatre work is a response to personal stories and cultural concerns. Campbell is one half of the duo ''The Cast'', whose version of the Robert Burns poem "Auld Lang Syne" featured in the movie ''Sex and the City (film), Sex and the City''. John McCusker
John McCusker (born 15 May 1973) is a Scottish folk musician, record producer, and composer. McCusker was a member of the Battlefield Band in the 1990s and worked as a band member and producer for folk singer Kate Rusby. He has produced and arranged music for various artists and has released several solo albums. Biography McCusker was born in Bellshill, Scotland, on the 15th of May 1973. At age seven, his Irish mother encouraged him to learn the fiddle. He then went on to participate in local youth orchestras and cèilidh bands. At age 14, he formed a band with schoolmates called ''Parcel O'Rogues'', named after Robert Burns' poem ''Sic a Parcel o' Rogues in a Nation''. Two years later, McCusker declined an offer from the Royal Scottish Academy in Glasgow in order to tour with the Battlefield Band, with whom he spent eleven years. Celtic Connections
The Celtic Connections festival started in 1994 in Glasgow, Scotland, and has since been held every January. Featuring over 300 concerts, ceilidhs, talks, free events, late night sessions and workshops, the festival focuses on the roots of traditional Scottish music and also features international folk, roots and world music artists. The festival is produced and promoted by Glasgow Life. Su-a Lee
Su-a Lee is a cellist born in Seoul, South Korea and resident in Scotland. She is known for her wide-ranging collaborations across classical music, contemporary music, Scottish traditional music and jazz. Education Lee was given a full scholarship to attend Chetham's School of Music (along with her two sisters Song-a and Hae-a) in Manchester at the age of nine. In 1988, she was then awarded a full-scholarship place to study with the late Harvey Shapiro at the Juilliard School in New York where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1992. Cambridge Folk Festival
The Cambridge Folk Festival is an annual music festival, established in 1965, held in the grounds of Cherry Hinton Hall in Cherry Hinton, one of the villages subsumed by the city of Cambridge, England. The festival is known for its eclectic mix of music and a wide definition of what might be considered folk. It occurs over a long weekend (3½ days) in summer at Cherry Hinton Hall. Tønder Festival is an annual folk music festival in Tønder, Denmark. It is held on the last weekend of August. It was founded in 1974. The first festival took place in 1975. The festival is one of the most prominent festivals for traditional and modern folk music in Europe. Around 2500 volunteers helps create the festival every year. The program is composed of international artists from especially Ireland, Scotland, Canada, United States, England & Scandinavia. Celtic Colours International Festival is a Celtic music festival held annually in October on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. First held in 1997, the festival has featured musicians from the Celtic world and attracted visitors to Cape Breton Island around the time of peak autumn colour. Hogmanay Live
''Hogmanay'' (formerly ''Hogmanay Live'') is a New Year's Eve television special broadcast by BBC One Scotland, covering Scotland's Hogmanay festivities for New Year's Eve. The programme in all its iterations feature a mixture of Scottish contemporary and folk music, with some past programming also featuring live coverage of parts of the Princes Street concert in Edinburgh. The special features coverage of the firing of Edinburgh Castle's One O'Clock Gun at midnight and the subsequent fireworks and celebrations in Edinburgh.
