Giuseppe Montanari
Giuseppe Montanari (1889–1976) was an Italian painter associated with the Novecento Italiano movement. Biography Montanari was born in Osimo, Italy. He moved to Milan in 1906 and studied at the Brera Academy. He moved to Varese after World War I. The influence of Ubaldo Oppi and Felice Casorati led him to simplify his volumes and endow them with greater solidity in the 1920s. He joined the Novecento Italiano movement and took part in their first and second shows (Milan, 1926 and 1929). His participation in the Venice Biennale began by invitation in 1924 with the 14th Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte della Città di Venezia. His subject matter was drawn from regional folklore in this period and his painting of fishermen (Pescatori) was bought by the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Milan, in 1930. The former Casa del Fascio of Varese (), (also Palazzo del Littorio) today known as Questura di Varese, is a building located in Varese, Italy. Fondazione Cariplo is a charitable foundation in Milan, Italy. It was created in December 1991 when the Amato law, Law no. 218 of 30 July 1990, came into force. Under this law, saving banks were required to separate into a not-for-profit foundation and a commercial banking arm. The Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde, commonly known as Cariplo, was divided into the Fondazione Cariplo and Cariplo SpA, the bank, which merged with Ambroveneto in 1998. The Venice Biennale ( ; ) is an international cultural exhibition hosted annually in Venice, Italy. Novecento Italiano () was an Italian artistic movement founded in Milan in 1922 to create an art based on the rhetoric of the fascism of Benito Mussolini, Mussolini. History Novecento Italiano was founded by Anselmo Bucci (1887–1955), Leonardo Dudreville (1885–1975), Achille Funi, Gian Emilio Malerba (1880–1926), Piero Marussig, Pietro Marussig, Ubaldo Oppi, and Mario Sironi. Felice Casorati
Felice Casorati (4 December 1883 – 1 March 1963) was an Italian painter, sculptor, and printmaker. The paintings for which he is most noted include figure compositions, portraits and still lifes, which are often distinguished by unusual perspective effects. Life and work Casorati was born in Novara. He showed an early passion for music, but abandoned his study of piano after a serious illness, and became interested in art. To please his mother he studied law at the University of Padua until 1906, but his ambition to be a painter was confirmed in 1907 when a painting of his was shown in the Venice Biennale. The works he produced in the early years of his career were naturalistic in style, but after 1910 the influence of the symbolists and particularly of Gustav Klimt turned him toward a more visionary approach. Ubaldo Oppi
Ubaldo Oppi (29 July 1889 – 25 October 1942) was an Italian painter, one of the founders of the Novecento Italiano in Milan. He painted in a neo-quattrocento realist style. Biography He was born in Bologna, Italy, but by the age of 4 years, his father, a shoe salesman, had moved to Vicenza. He was sent by his father North to the German countries to learn the shoe trade, but elected to stay in Vienna (1907–1909), and study under Gustav Klimt. He returned to Italy, and was drafted into the military for a year, serving in the Adriatic coasts. He would then travel to Paris, where he frequented the modern artistic circles. There he had a brief affair with Fernande Olivier, who had been the mistress of Pablo Picasso, an acquaintance of Ubaldo. In 1913, he exhibited at the Ca' Pesaro in Venice along with Casorati, Martini, and Gino Rossi. In 1915, he joins again the army; this time the alpine regiments.
