Giuseppe Albini (admiral)
Michele Giuseppe Albini (Villefranche-sur-Mer, 20 September 1780 – Spotorno, 31 July 1859) was an Italian admiral and politician, who was commander of the naval squadron of the Royal Sardinian Navy sent to the aid of the Republic of San Marco, Republic of Venice during the Naval operations of the First Italian War of Independence, First Italian War of Independence. Senator of the Kingdom of Sardinia, awarded the honours of Grand Officer of the Military Order of Savoy, and Grand Officer of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, he was the father of the admirals :it:Giovan Battista Albini, Giovan Battista and :it: Augusto Albini, Augusto Albini. Portolan
Portolan charts are nautical charts, first made in the 13th century in the Mediterranean basin and later expanded to include other regions. The word ''portolan'' comes from the Italian ''portolano'', meaning "related to ports or harbors", and which since at least the 17th century designates "a collection of sailing directions". Definition The term "portolan chart" was coined in the 1890s because at the time it was assumed that these maps were related to portolani, medieval or early modern books of sailing directions. Other names that have been proposed include rhumb line charts, compass charts or loxodromic charts whereas modern French scholars prefer to call them nautical charts to avoid any relationship with portolani. The Military Order of Savoy was a military honorary order of the Kingdom of Sardinia first, and of the Kingdom of Italy later. Following the abolition of the Italian monarchy, the order became the Military Order of Italy. History The origin of the Military Order of Savoy can be traced back to the Medal of Military Valor granted by Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia to his soldiers. Between 1789 and 1815 this medal went into disuse because of the Piedmontese and Subalpine Republics and the subsequent Napoleonic regime in Italy in Savoy and Piedmont. On 1 April 1815 the medal was bestowed again by Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia and on the 14th of August of the same year replaced by the Military Order of Savoy. Philippe Antoine d'Ornano, Comte d'Ornano (; 17 January 1784 – 13 October 1863) was a French soldier and politician who fought in the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. He was made a Marshal of France in 1861. Early life D'Ornano was born in Ajaccio, Corsica on January 17, 1784. He was a son of Lodovico Antonio d'Ornano and Isabella Maria Buonaparte.
