''Girl with a Pearl Earring'' is a 2008 play. Adapted by David Joss Buckley from the 1999 novel of the same title by Tracy Chevalier, it premiered at the Cambridge Arts Theatre. It then received its London premiere at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 29 September 2008, directed by Joe Dowling and designed by Peter Mumford. Its London run had been scheduled to end on 1 November, but after largely poor reviews and in a poor financial climate it closed early on 18 October. David Joss Buckley
David Joss Buckley (born 17 June 1948) is a British screenwriter, playwright, author, actor, and musician. A BAFTA Awards, BAFTA-nominated screenwriter, Buckley has written many hours of television drama, including episodes of ''Emmerdale'' (1989–1996), ''EastEnders,'' ''Rosemary & Thyme'', ''Down to Earth (2000 TV series), Down To Earth'', ''Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married'' and ''Casualty (TV series), Casualty''. ''Girl with a Pearl Earring'' () is an oil painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer, dated 1665. Going by various names over the centuries, it became known by its present title towards the end of the 20th century because of the earring worn by the girl portrayed there. The work has been in the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1902 and has been the subject of various literary and cinematic treatments. Description The painting is a tronie, the Dutch 17th-century description of a "head" that was not meant to be a portrait. It depicts a European girl wearing "exotic dress", an "oriental turban", and what appears to be a very large pearl as an earring. The subject of the painting is unknown, with it being possible either that she was a real model, or that Vermeer created a more generalised and mysterious woman, perhaps representing a Sibyl or biblical figure. Maria Thins (c. 1593 – 27 December 1680) was the mother-in-law of Johannes Vermeer and a member of the Gouda, South Holland, Gouda Thins family. She was raised in a devout Catholic Church in the Netherlands, Dutch Catholic family with two sisters and a brother. Outliving her parents and siblings, she received inheritances over the years, making her a wealthy woman. She married a prosperous brickmaker, Reynier Bolnes, in 1622. ''Girl with a Pearl Earring'' is a 1999 historical novel written by Tracy Chevalier. Set in 17th-century Delft, Holland, the novel was inspired by local painter Johannes Vermeer's ''Girl with a Pearl Earring''. Chevalier presents a fictional account of Vermeer, the model and the painting. The novel was adapted into a 2003 film of the same name and a 2008 play. In May 2020, BBC Radio 4 broadcast a new dramatisation of the novel. Background Tracy Chevalier's inspiration for the novel was a poster of Johannes Vermeer's ''Girl with a Pearl Earring''.
