Girl Versions
''Girl Versions'' is the sixth full-length album by Canadian singer-songwriter Emm Gryner, released in 2001 on Gryner's independent Dead Daisy Records. It received a Juno Awards nomination for "Best Pop Album" in 2002. Similarly to Tori Amos' '' Strange Little Girls'', which was released the same year, ''Girl Versions'' presented Gryner's reinterpretations of songs written by men. Unlike Amos' album, however, Gryner did not create characters to present the songs in an ironic or political context; instead, she simply chose some of her own favourite rock, heavy metal and punk songs and interpreted them in her own more pop-oriented style. The album was originally recorded live on March 24, 2001, in the Sarnia Public Library's theatre with cellist Alex McMaster. The tapes from the concert were allegedly lost, leading Gryner to re-record the album at Umbrella Sound in Toronto with producer Chris Wardman. Emm Gryner
Emm Gryner (born 8 June 1975 in Sarnia, Ontario) is a Canadian-Filipino singer, songwriter, recording artist, and author. She has released 20 albums as a solo performer, and has collaborated with artists including David Bowie and Chris Hadfield. Early life Gryner's childhood was spent in Forest, Ontario. Her father was of half Irish heritage and her mother was Filipina. She started to learn piano at age 4, picked up bass around age 14, and later took up guitar as well. Gryner attended North Lambton Secondary School in Forest, Ontario. Following high school, she graduated from Fanshawe College's Music Industry Arts program in 1995. Gryner has two brothers, Tony and record producer and musician Frank. "Straight to You" is a song by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds appearing on their 1992 album ''Henry's Dream''. It was released as a single in 1992 by Mute Records. It charted at no. 68 in the UK and no. 96 in Australia. It gained both contemporary and retrospective critical acclaim. Blur (band)
Blur are an English rock band formed in London in 1988. The band consists of singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree. Their debut album, ''Leisure'' (1991), incorporated the sounds of Madchester and shoegazing. Following a stylistic change influenced by English guitar pop groups such as the Kinks, the Beatles and XTC, Blur released '' Modern Life Is Rubbish'' (1993), '' Parklife'' (1994) and '' The Great Escape'' (1995). "Song 2" is a song by English rock band Blur. The song is the second song on their eponymous fifth studio album. Released on 7 April 1997, "Song 2" peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, number four on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, and number six on the US ''Billboard'' Modern Rock Tracks chart (now called the Alternative Airplay chart). "Straight to Hell" is a song by the Clash, from their album ''Combat Rock''. It was released as a double A-side single with " Should I Stay or Should I Go" on 17 September 1982 in 12" and 7" vinyl format (the 7" vinyl is also available as a picture disc). Writing and recording "Straight to Hell" was written and recorded towards the very end of the Clash's New York recording sessions for the ''Combat Rock'' album. Mick Jones' guitar technician Digby Cleaver describes the sessions as "a mad, creative rush" that occurred on 30 December 1981, the day before the Clash was due to fly out of New York on New Year's Eve 1981. Def Leppard are an English rock band formed in 1976 in Sheffield. "Pour Some Sugar on Me" is a song by the English rock band Def Leppard from their 1987 album ''Hysteria''. It reached number 2 on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100 on 23 July 1988, behind " Hold On to the Nights" by Richard Marx.
