Giovanni Rossi (anarchist)
Giovanni Rossi (11 January 18569 January 1943) was an Italian anarchist, collectivist, writer, and founder of utopian communities. He was a promoter of cooperative libertarian colonies, free love, and the emancipation of women. The experimental libertarian Cecília Colony he founded in Brazil in 1890, inspired several fictional treatments including a feature film ''La Cecilia'' in 1976. Biography Giovanni Rossi was born in Pisa in 1856. An agronomist and veterinarian by profession, he was influenced by French utopian socialists. His libertarian ideals included free love and the emancipation of women. In 1875, he began the serial publication of a utopian novel, ''Un Comune Socialista'', whose female protagonist is named Cecília. He continued to publish new chapters until 1891. In 1878 he published his first book, using the pseudonym "Cardias", promoting his theory of anarchist collectives. Giovanni Rossi (bicycle Racer)
Giovanni Rossi (7 May 1926 – 17 September 1983) was a Swiss professional road bicycle racer. He was professional from 1949 to 1954 where he won two victories. In the only Tour de France that he participated, Rossi won the first stage and wore the yellow jersey as leader of the general classification for one stage after his win. His other victory was a stage win in the Tour de Suisse, also in 1951. He also finished second in another stage in that year’s Tour de France and came second in the 1951 Swiss road race championships behind 1950 Tour de France winner Ferdinand "Ferdi" Kübler. He also competed in the individual and team road race events at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Giovanni De' Rossi
Giovanni de' Rossi (21 November 1431 – 1502) was an Italian condottiero and the fifth count of San Secondo. He was nicknamed 'il diseredato' (the disinherited). Biography The eldest son of Pier Maria II de' Rossi and Antonia Torelli, he was born in San Secondo and was so different to his father (especially in politics) that he ended up disinheriting him in his 1464 will in favour of his legitimate sons Guido and Bernardo and his illegitimate son Ottaviano (Arluno). Giovanni was thus exiled with nothing and entered the service of the king of France, though he continued to claim the inheritance which had been denied him. When Pier Maria II died on 1 September 1482 in the midst of the Rossi War against Sforza troops under Ludovico il Moro and Pier Maria II's own son Guido, the succession became even more tangled. Giovan Antonio De' Rossi
Giovanni Antonio de' Rossi (1616–1695) was an Italian architect of the Baroque period, active mainly in Rome. Life He was a contemporary of Carlo Rainaldi. In 1657, he completed the sacristy of Tivoli Cathedral. That same year, he designed the renovations to Chiesa di San Rocco all'Augusteo, adding a dome, the sacristy and a new chapel. He created the shrine over the high altar, designed by Rainaldi, in Santa Maria in Campitelli to house the icon of Santa Maria in Portico. At about the time he became the architect of the Monte di Pietà in Rome until his death and built its oval chapel from the 1650s onwards. For Pope Clement X he carried out an extensive and hurried refurbishment (1670–76) of the family's Palazzo Altieri near the Church of Il Gesù . Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi
Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (1627 – 1691) was an Italian engraver and printer, active in Rome in the second half of the 17th century. His father, Giuseppe de Rossi (1570-1639), was the founder of the most important and active printing press of the 17th century in Rome. The printing press begun in 1633, by Giuseppe de Rossi, and it passed firstly to Giovanni Giacomo and to his brother Giandomenico (1619-1653), and then later to Lorenzo Filippo (1682-?); in 1738 it became the Calcografia Camerale, from 1870 until 1945 the Regia Calcografica, and today it is known as the Calcografia Nazionale. Giovanni Battista De' Rossi
Giovanni Battista de' Rossi (22 February 1698 – 23 May 1764) was an Italian Roman Catholic priest. He served as the canon of Santa Maria in Cosmedin after his cousin, who was a priest serving there, died. He was a popular confessor despite his initial fears that his epileptic seizures could manifest in the Confessional. Rossi opened a hospice for homeless women not long after his ordination, and he became known for his work with prisoners and ill people, to whom he dedicated his entire ecclesial mission. Rossi's canonization was celebrated on 8 December 1881. It had begun decades before but was suspended due to tensions in Europe that meant work could not be pursued regarding the cause; it was later revitalized and he was beatified in 1860. Giovanni Bernardo De Rossi (October 25, 1742 in Castelnuovo Nigra, Piedmont – March 23, 1831 in Parma) was an Italian Christian Hebraist. He studied in Ivrea and Turin. In October 1769, he was appointed professor of Oriental languages at the University of Parma, where he spent the rest of his life. His inaugural lecture on the causes of the neglect of Hebrew study was published in 1769 at Turin. Scholarly writings De Rossi devoted himself to three chief lines of investigation—-typographical, bibliographical, and text-critical. Influenced by the example of Benjamin Kennicott, he determined on the collection of the variant readings of the Old Testament, and for that purpose collected a large number of manuscripts and old editions. Giovanni Battista (Carlo) de Rossi (23 February 1822 – 20 September 1894) was an Italian archaeologist, famous even outside his field for rediscovering early Christian catacombs. Life and works Born in Rome, he was the son of Commendatore Camillo Luigi De Rossi and Marianna Marchesa Bruti, his wife, who had two sons, Giovanni and Michele Stefano. Two days after birth Giovanni was baptized in the parish church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. De Rossi showed an early interest in Christian antiquity. In 1838, in company with his parents, he visited Tuscany, where the innumerable treasures of art completely absorbed his attention. He studied philosophy the Collegio Romano from 1838 to 1840.
