Giovanni Battista Locatelli (opera Director)
Giovanni Battista Locatelli (7 January 1713 – 14 March 1785) was an Italian opera director, impresario and owner of a private opera company. Locatelli was court poet at Bonn in 1741. From 1748 to 1756 he presented opera productions in Prague, including works by Gluck to libretti by Metastasio. He presented other operas in Dresden as well in the 1750s. He went bankrupt in 1757 and left for Russia to relaunch his career as an impresario. In 1757 he and his troupe were invited to St. Petersburg. They put on an opera every week for the court, and two to three times a week they were allowed to give open public performances. The repertoire was mostly of Italian opera buffa, including one titled ''Sanctuary of the Gods''. The Empress and Grand Duke Peter each attended at least one performance. Giovanni Battista Locatelli (1734–1805), also called John Baptist Locatelli was an Italian sculptor known for a well publicized dispute with George Walpole, 3rd Earl of Orford and the Royal Academy. Biography Locatelli was born in Verona on 17 November 1734. After working in Verona and Padua during his early career he was working in London from at least 1775 until 1796 when he returned to Italy. There is some evidence to suggest he may have worked for a time in the late 1790s in Paris before ending his career in Milan under the patronage of Napoleon Bonaparte. English contemporaries often referred to him as John Baptist Locatelli – an Anglicization of his common Italian forenames. Career Early career He began his career in his native Italy and was a member of the Venetian Academy.
