Giovanni Castiglione (cardinal)
Giovanni Castiglione (1420–1460) was an Italian Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal. Biography Giovanni Castiglione was born in Milan in 1420, the son of Palatine Count Maffiolo Castiglione and Angela Lampugnani. His family was of the patrician rank. After studying civil law, Castiglione became a protonotary apostolic, gaining a reputation as a great canonist and sacred orator. Pope Eugene IV named him a secretary apostolic. On 2 September 1444 the cathedral chapter of Coutances Cathedral elected him Bishop of Coutances. In 1447, he was named papal legate to the Kingdom of England. He was transferred to the see of Pavia on 3 October 1453. He served as the papal legate of Pope Nicholas V and Pope Callixtus III to Germany, in which capacity he was present at the Diet of Regensburg of April 1454 and the Diet of Frankfurt of October 1454. Giovanni Battista Castiglione
Giovanni Battista Castiglione (1516–1598) was the Italian tutor to Princess (later Queen) Elizabeth I, appointed Groom of the Privy Chamber from 1559. It is speculated that he taught Prince (later King) Edward VI. A humanist reformer, Castiglione was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1556 by Princess Elizabeth's sister, Queen Mary, accused of sedition being so severely tortured that he was left permanently lame. Later, he carried Princess Elizabeth's letters from when she was imprisoned in the Tower. Life Born at Gassino, near Torino, in Piedmont, son of Captain Piero Castiglione, of Mantua, he served in the Army of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at Landrecies and Boulogne. Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione
Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (baptized 23 March 16095 May 1664) was an Italian Baroque painter, printmaker and draftsman, of the Genoese school (painting), Genoese school. He is best known now for his etchings, and as the inventor of the printmaking technique of monotyping. He was known as ''Il Grechetto'' in Italy and in France as ''Le Benédette''. He painted portraits, history paintings and landscapes, but came to specialize in rural scenes with more animals than human figures. Noah's ark and the animals entering the Ark was a favourite subject of his, and he devised a number of other new subjects from the early parts of the Old Testament with the patriarchs and their animals. Biography Castiglione was born in Genoa. The biographer of Genoese painters, Raffaele Soprani says his parents had him placed in the studio of Giovanni Battista Paggi.
