Gillian Sandeman
Gillian Ann Sandeman (born ) is a former politician from Ontario, Canada. She was a New Democratic member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1975 to 1977. She represented the riding of Peterborough. Background Sandeman is a prominent social activist in the Peterborough area, having served as a president of the city's social planning council, and has written an occasional gardening column for the ''Peterborough Examiner''. Politics Sandeman ran as the New Democratic Party candidate for Peterborough in the 1974 federal election, losing to incumbent MP Hugh Faulkner. In the 1975 provincial election she ran as the NDP candidate in the riding of Peterborough. She defeated Progressive Conservative incumbent John Turner by 505 votes. Phyllis Marion Boyd ( Watt; March 26, 1946 – October 11, 2022) was a Canadian politician in Ontario. She was a New Democratic member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1990 to 1999 who represented the riding of London Centre. She served as a member of cabinet in the government of Bob Rae. Early life Boyd was born in Toronto on March 26, 1946, to Bill and Dorothy Watt. She studied at Glendon College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English and history in 1968. From 1968 to 1973, she worked as an assistant to the president of York University. In 1975–76, she helped faculty members of York University win their first union contract. Trent University is a public liberal arts university in Peterborough, Ontario, with a satellite campus in Oshawa, which serves the Regional Municipality of Durham. Judy Rebick (born August 15, 1945) is a Canadian writer, journalist, political activist, and feminist. Early life Born in Reno, Nevada, Rebick and her family moved to Toronto when she was 9. She became a socialist activist in the 1970s, joining the Revolutionary Marxist Group. She was a member of its successor, the Revolutionary Workers League, and wrote articles for the RWL's newspaper, ''Socialist Voice'', until she left the organization in the early 1980s. The Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies (CAEFS) is an association of groups operating under the Elizabeth Fry Society banner, similar in many respects to the John Howard Society. Bill Domm
William Henry Domm (July 24, 1930 – January 8, 2000) was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons of Canada from 1979 to 1993. He was best known for his crusades against the metric system and in favour of capital punishment. Domm represented the riding of Peterborough, Ontario, from the 1979 federal election until his defeat in the 1993 election. Born in St. Catharines, Ontario, Domm was the son of a United Church of Canada minister. He was educated at the Ryerson Institute of Technology and became a radio broadcaster in Peterborough. Domm's campaign against Metric conversion in Canada was most vocal during the final Pierre Trudeau government of 1980 to 1984. In 1983, he and other Tory MPs illegally pumped gas using Imperial measurements at their "Freedom to Measure" gas station.
