Alvan Cullem Gillem (July 29, 1830 – December 2, 1875) was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Although Southern-born, he remained loyal to the Federal government and fought in several battles in the Western Theater before commanding occupation troops in Mississippi and Arkansas during Reconstruction. He later played a prominent role in the Modoc War in 1873. Early life and career Gillem was born in Gainesboro in Jackson County, Tennessee, the son of Samuel Gillem. In 1851, he graduated 11th in his class from the United States Military Academy and was assigned as a second lieutenant to the artillery. He was soon sent to the front lines in Florida to serve in a battery during the Third Seminole War until 1852. He was then reassigned to the Texas frontier following the war. Alvan Cullem Gillem II (April 20, 1917 – September 3, 2009) was a United States Air Force officer who reached the rank of lieutenant general. Family Gillem was the first son of Lieutenant General Alvan Cullom Gillem Jr. (1888–1973) and Virginia (Harrison) Gillem (December 18, 1895 – October 25, 1964). He had two siblings, Richard D. Gillem (who became a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army) and Mary. Military career Gillem enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Monroe, Virginia, in 1935. He received a congressional appointment to the United States Military Academy for the fall of 1936, from which he graduated with the rank of second lieutenant in the spring of 1940. Gillem immediately entered pilot training in the fall of 1940 and graduated in March 1941 as a first lieutenant. Gladys Gillem Wall (January 6, 1920 – August 12, 2009), also known as Gladys "Killem" Gillem or Gladys "Kill 'Em" Gillem, was an American professional wrestler. Professional wrestling career Gillem was inspired to begin a career as a professional wrestling after seeing Mildred Burke wrestle. She was trained in Tennessee with Wilma Gordon, and she began wrestling in carnival shows. Besides wrestling men and women, Gillem wrestled bears and alligators as part of her act. Gillem eventually found work touring with promoter Billy Wolfe's, the husband of Mildred Burke, troop of women wrestlers in 1942. She was often an opponent of Burke's, wrestling her for the World Women's Championship. She acted in this capacity until her retirement in 1962. Jennings Frederick "Sam" "Jenks" Gillem (c. 1890 – November 11, 1951) was an American football player and coach. Gillem played for the Sewanee Tigers of Sewanee: The University of the South, and was selected All-Southern in 1910, 1911, and 1912. His ability punting the football netted him a spot on an ''Associated Press'' All-Time Southeast 1869-1919 era team. He served as the head football coach at Howard College—now known as Samford University (1924–1926), Birmingham–Southern College (1928–1939), and Sewanee (1940–1941), compiling a career college football record of 73–65–10.
